Christmas makam music

A little book on Suryani music I have associates the makams with months in the church year. Christmas gets hijaz and "kerküklü", whatever the heck that is - anyone got a description and some examples?

More generally, anyone know some makam-based Christmas music, for whatever kind of Christmas?

Hi Jack,

I believe that, in the Eastern churches, Easter is a much, much bigger deal than Christmas. As far as "real" Arabic music for Christmas (as opposed to Western carols in Arabic*, which I've seen more of), I own and have heard snippets.

I believe Fairouz has recorded some, mostly chant-like, e.g.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owoci98-Kgk

You can also look on the web page of the David Ensemble, a Coptic outfit from Egypt: http://www.davidensemble.com/english/musicnotation.htm

If you are on Facebook, I'm pretty sure Jordanian Christian oudist/qanounist Humam Eid has posted some scores of traditional Levantine Arabic Christian hymns (though more for Easter than Christmas, if memory serves). - https://www.facebook.com/%D8%B7%D9%84%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84...

Maybe our Founder, Mike Malek, might have some ideas for you.

One of the things that has kept me interested in the oud and Middle Eastern music world have been the ability to connect the music with my own spirituality and traditions.

If you want to try your own Google or YouTube search, I believe the Arabic term for Christmas is "عيد الميلاد" ('Eid Al-Milad). Cut and paste, if you don't type Arabic.

Good luck!

Happy Holidays,
"Udi" John

There's this Armenian sharagan (hymn)
Khorhoort Medz (Great Mystery) listed as "ussak" although the Armenian church has its own modal system which is truly understood by very few....

https://youtu.be/zvr7JI8SO48

Great and wondrous mystery
Which was revealed this day
The shepherds sing with the angels
They give the Good News to the world
Christ is born and revealed

There's also this recording by Arto Tuncboyaciyan
The beginning is an old Armenian Christmas folk song or carol from Turkey

https://youtu.be/6ITvM2BzYis

There used to be many Armenian Christmas carols from traditional music which were called Avedis's, but they have been mostly forgotten unfortunately.

I actually prefer to play this melody of Khorhurt Medz...unfortunately I can only find it with flute and organ!!!

https://youtu.be/zvr7JI8SO48

I've looked and never been able to find a better version of this one.

There's this which is almost the same but the organ version has a better rhythm, because it's the melody used for processions.

Actually these are all variants of one another.

Poking around the David Ensemble's web page, I also came across a pretty good example of an Egyptian Coptic Orthodox hymn in maqam bayati, "E Parthenos" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2pgSYgzEzU song starts @ c.6:48
