104 years old Syrian Oud for sale (1915)

Hello,

I am really wondering if that instrument is original. Yes, Hayek worked at the time in Aleppo, but the instruments I know from him look really different.
-- All instruments I know have a different bridge
-- this bridge here is a later style and was probably replaced togather with
-- soundboard which is of a really simple to bad quality
-- the mould looks typically for Hayek, but the section to the neck is a crazy work and by sure not original
-- the pegs look like those from that time, but the mother of pearl makes me wondering
-- the fingerboard is of course not original which leads me to the question what's about the neck? I dot see anything beneath ne new fingerboard. And the pegbox? I can imagine both are not original too.

So may be some more detailed pictures including one from the label could help.

Best regards
Matthias

Agree with Matthias 100%. Bridge looks newer, not typical of Hayek or other Aleppian ouds of that time. Face surprisingly low quality wood, may be partially replaced, strange work around the neck joint, pegs look appropriate to the time period and style, but it would be unusual for a simple oud with a cheap face to have inlaid pegs.

Here is an authentic Hayek oud, also with a replaced fingerboard but otherwise original.

Looking at it, I also notice that the purfling is very different, both around the soundhole and around the soundboard.

None of this is conclusive—this instrument is from the 1920s or 1930s if I recall, and he could've changed some things. But it all suggests that the oud listed for sale is not totally original, and we don't know the extent to which it was changed. It may be a wonderful instrument, but it seems to have at least a few modifications over the years.

I was just told by some Oud expert that the top of The Oud is also changed and i was not told this fact by the Oud owner , so I deleted the post and I am not responsible for this Oud anymore.

Thank you
Sam
