New detailed Encylopedia Britannica article on "Islamic Music"
Encylopedia Brittanica has recently published (January 2019) a new article on Islamic Arts which includes a long and detailed section on "Islamic
Music".
The article covers historical developments from the pre-Islamic period through the first four caliphs and then on to the development of codified
classical Islamic music.
I found the article quite interesting and learned a lot of new things, so perhaps it might be of interest to other forum members, too. Here is the
link:
I was able to read this article for free the first time, but when I went back another day all I got was a paywall asking me to pay to see the full
article. So I guess you get one article free-- might be handy to use the website's "Print" function and print the entire article to pdf for reading
later.
I had not heard of the author before, but the bio reads:
Amnon Shiloah
Professor of Musicology, Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Author of The Theory of Music in Arabic Writings and others.
