Technical Question on Strings
Hi all -Thanks in advance for your help on this.
I know each Oud is different when it comes to strings, but I am trying to 1-know what is the highest gauge of string I can get for each (or
recommended range), 2- how do I go about experimenting; and 3- clarify my understanding of how strings work.
From previous conversations I thought I understood that the smaller the Oud, the higher gauge you might need your strings to be. But Oud Strings sell
LaBella Sets that almost follow the opposite pattern. Did I get this wrong?
For reference here is my actual Oud that I purchased a couple of years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGmaq_qV4dM . It is a Zeryab Nahat and measures a little short of 59 (below the nut to the bridge).
Here is what Mustafa sells. I am planning to replace the c ang g with 60 and 76 Nylegut anyways, but I am trying to understand.
OudStrings.com option 1: 60 cm, Arabic tuning, medium tension, wound d and g - LaBella
C .044w
F .033w x2
A .027w x2
d .023w x2
g .019w x2
c' .026 nyl x2
I got my hands on these and thought I'd give them a try, but 1- they are thinner than the Kurschner that came with my Oud and I think I can tell that
I don't like their sound/action being thinner. The wound g is soo buzzy/metally and I am really disliking that. The whole set is generally more buzzy
and I think the two strings in each set are maybe hitting each other after open strokes and are buzzing more. The only thing I like about this set is
that being thinner makes them easier to play, and the C and c are so much better than my previous Kurschner.
- Does that mean I need higher tension? Higher guage?
- To experiment, do I just keep going one number higher?
OudStrings.com option 2: 58.5 cm, Arabic tuning, low tension, plain g - LaBella
C .043w
F .032w x2
A .026w x2
d .021w x2
g .032RN x2
c' .026RN x2
How come these are lower gauges (thickness?) even though this is a shorter Oud?
Kurschner: I am also interested in this set Kurschner set because I liked its sound on a Nahat Oud that I think is the same size as minne (and was
built by John Vergara, which I am sure is also why it sounds great). However I can't tell the size of the strings. I asked multiple sellers and they
don't know. The manufacturer isn't responding. Anyone used these before?

Thank you so much in advance!
