Dear Hatam Bey,
I play Turkish ney, and live in the San Francisco Bay area. We have a ney/ilahi group that I sponsor. I've also done some construction, but I don't
have the time to put into it that it deserves. There are also a few here for sale, too. Where are you located? --Hank Levin

Hi Hank Pasha,
That sounds great. I am in Houston, TX. I play Arabic ney. However, I recently got a Mansur ney and fell in loe with it. By Friday, I will have a
"basic" set comprised of Mansur, Kiz (=mahur), Yildiz(=rast), Supurde (dokah), and a Bolahenk Nisfiye (=Bosalik). Let's talk!
Best Regards,
Hatem

Hi Samir,
Great idea. I am sure you will not regret it
As a rule of thumb, stay away from Mahammad Ali St. and the internet!
Your best bet is Dr. Qadri Sorour in Egypt. You may contact him to send you a decent set for a reasonable price.
If you are visiting Lebanon, Samir Siblini also sells neys, but his are as expensive as the Turkish ones. You may get a Dokah from him to start.
Start with the main ney which is the dokah. Make sure that you treat it with oil first. I will be more than happy to tell you how.
Here are some links for the ney. The one by Maged Michael is excellent for beginners.
http://www.philobos.com/NeyPage/index.htm
Below are good sites to introduce you to the instrument. Notice that the Turkish neys are bigger, but there is a few ones that are duplicates of the
Arabic neys. The Turkish terminology is slightly different. I will be happy to explain the differences if you are interested.
You will find a drawing for making neys in this page. It is the most comprehensive on on the internet.

These pages contain excellent information too:

The best bamboo for making neys is arundo donax.
You can read about it below:

If you have any questions, my email is : hatem_afandi@hotmail.com
Will be happy to help in anyway possible.
Good luck,
Hatem
