finishing an oud

Hi all.

I recently bought a syrian made oud in Jordan. Unlike the ouds that my teacher had, my oud did not come with a finish on it, and I was wondering if it would be beneficial for me to put a lacquer or some other type of finish on it so it doesnt stain and to strengthen the wood since it is very fragile.

Any suggestions/advice on whether or not I should finish it, what I should use, and how?

Thanks
Jon

The short answer is NO !
The longer answer is NO, NO, NO !
An unfinished soundboard will produce a better tone, and the thinner the wood the better.

Best wishes
