Plain Nylgut Third

I exchanged some email with Mimmo at Aquila recently about a plain Nylgut third course. I remember that John (Beloved) Habib was interested in this.

Even though matching the Kg tension with the other strings in the Aquila oud sets would call for a plain 3rd of 1.08 or 1.16 millimeter thickness, Mimmo recommended .94mm, saying that the unevenness in Kg tension is smoothed by scaling tension (the link is to Mimmo's article, Italian Violin Strings in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries; scroll down almost halfway to "Equal Tension, Equal Feel, and Scaling Tension" to read all about it.)

Practically speaking RE the oud sets, the basic idea is that for a string of .94mm width, the tactile tension of the string under the musician's fingers will be similar to that of the other strings.

Incidentally, John, I wonder how your search for a certain depth of sound in your oud is going; I'm deeply interested (pun intended—after the fact). BTW, might there be a particular oud and/or recording that could demonstrate the kind of thing you wish to achieve?
