Traditional Malay Music and the Oud

Salam all!

I guess there has been no exposure of malay music with the oud in here. But surprisingly it has been around for many many years. It is part of the malay tradition. The oud is known as 'gambus' in malay. It is played in 2 different traditiona genre known as "Zapin' & "Ghazal"

The arrival of the oud came when the Yemenis came to the malay archipelago to trade and spread Islam. They brought along with them the culture and arts. This has infiltrated to the mainstream of the malay culture who regarded the Arabs as the knowledgeble ones in relations to Islam.

Sadly, there are very very few who can play this kind of malay music today. In Singapore, there is only one who can play such kind of music in a relatively good way. Zubir Abdullah is his name. He is currently a lecturer at the national Institute of education, teaching malays arts and music.

Nonetheless I attach some clips for your hearing in Real Audio format. Enjoy and do tell em of what you think of it.

I guess that you guys would have guessed where i come from. I am from Singapore but currently studying in Germany. :wavey:

I hope you guys are enjoying it as much as I enjoy doing this in the midst of my examination period.
