I found this old oud
Does anyone know who built this oud? or recognize any about it? style, origin, ....
inside there is a paper telling that its from Aleppo Syria, 1960... the paper looks not really professionnal... maybe it was added later or...?

Old oud
Dear friend
From the back this is definitely a Syrian oud. Very classic design, and the workmanship appears to be of quality, inspite the crack which could have
happened through accident or abuse.
But let us see the front, and maybe the label please.

the weird thing is that the cenre shamsiya is missing... the label has been removed and someone stamped a made in syria sign at the base of the oud
just under the brige seems like they wanted the identity of the oud to disapear

I could see it says it is made in 1960 , and it's got Halab "a place of make".
If you take a closer shot of the lable I can tell more.

from the arabic word's i can tell you it is made in halap syria in 1960
attache another good picture of the label inside the oud so i can read it.

Although the quality of the work is very much Nahat-like, I have doubts that it is a real Nahat and not an imitator.
A lot of the Syrian ouds share common features, and many makers were very skilled.
The sahmsiya AND the qamariyas are not typical Nahat, and I have an old Lebanese oud with the identical qamariya style.
The fingerboard inlay looks like a George Nahat, but remember that Anouar Kubeh has a very similar inlay, and so do several other Syrian makers (e.g.
the Armenian Bedrosian).
I don't know of any Nahat that worked in Halab (Aleppo), and they were all gone to Brazil by 1960 anyway.
The "raqmah" is not a typical Nahat, and the bridge differs from the standard Nahat.
I don't know who would remove a Nahat label, but accidents happen.
Nevertheless it is a very beautiful oud, and the work is meticulous.
I hope it is a Nahat, but I'm not sure

Thanks to all for giving your input about this strange oud. It's reconforting to know that there is connaisseurs around.
It's really weid, the label is in fact a paper rapidly written, telling about the oud being made in aleppo, 1960, oud #, no name, shop, nothing. The
SYRIA MADE too is due to give us some clue.... really strange, who would stamp an oud?? right on the face?? other than a syrian officer on the
border...
This oud's owner fled massacres in Turkey in the early 19th century, the rest of his familly was dispersed in Syria and beyond. He came to Canada in
the early century, and returned some ~50 years later to Syria to visit what left of his familly. Where he would have got the oud we see today..
anyways, here is the only similarity I have found, and its with a Nahaat, indeed, it's much insufficient to tell about it's builder, but.... all this
needs some research...
