rustic style of oud playing
found an intriguing mention of a "folk/country new style" of oud playing in the mp3 section but with no sound file link, alas.
"folk" and "country" might suggest different things to different cultures but i'd be very curious to know if there is a recognized "rustic" style of
oud playing - one that is presumably less technical, less embellished in virtuoso performance and more reliant on simple rhythm and melody.
i have three cds from two such andalusian player/singers but would like to know if theirs is a recognized style of play.
regards to all - bill

For me the master of "rustic style" based on rythm, no virtuosism nor fioritures is Muhammed Rouicha moroccan....lotar player

Here are links to his music.

There is also many "rustic oud style" players like Lybian Fewet Oasis music or Moroccan Tafilalet oud players.

And probably lot in Oman, Yemen, etc
Anyhow yr question is good..."rustic style" vs "academic style". However why new??. "Rustic style" is as older is not oldest than "academic style".
Some times "rustic style" is as complex and embellished thatn "academic style"
Who are these andalousian players ?

thank you for the rouicha links. i'm afraid i was only able to hear the music on one. i have a relatively old mac computer with too many down loads
as it is - very slow.
i've mentioned habib guerroumi and cheikh salim fergani before. they may not be examples of a rustic style but i like the simplicity of their solo
recordings and - not to be too dramatic about it - their soulful style of play.
habib guerroumi -
liner notes on the two cds i have by him say he is french-algerian, born in marseilles. i've read elsewhere that he is a medical doctor. he has also
recorded with his wife. information here:

doesn't work for me but here's some sound samples:

cheikh salim fergani -
there seems to be quite a lot of information about him on the net - he performed with marc loopuyt, for example - but mostly in french ... which,
alas, i do not speak.
sound samples here:

i liked the photo of the lone oudist you posted. as for needing anything else ... well ... er ....
ciao - bill
