Greetings to all Oud lovers
I have been visiting your forum, or shall I say got hooked since my first visit yesterday, and wow at last people who share my passion for the father
of musical instruments the great Oud ( in my opinion!)
I consider myself a learner even though I first started playing in 1995, but never trained enugh! due to work and study! but planing to revive and put
more effort into my learning.
I'm origionally from the Sudan in Africa, our music style is based on the pentatonic tones ( khumasi),
I have two Oud's one 14 year old Egyptian, and an 8 years old Syrian..
wish you all the best, and hope to be part of your community.
Best regards to all

Welcome to the site. I'd love to hear more about Sudanese music. Are you in a position to put up any sound clips?
All the best, Mark

All,
While we wait for Abusin to post his sound clips, here are two of my favorite Sudanese CDs with oud, with samples available:
Hamza El Din: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000000EIE/103-4277029-0699024?v=g...
Mustafa Al Sunni: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000IXIL/103-4277029-0699024?v=g...
And a well-known one I don't own a copy of, Abdel Gadir Salim: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000JQH9/qid=1145929993/sr=2-1/r...
African-American blues music is also based on pentatonic scales. An article claiming that Muslim culture had a strong influence on the blues was
published in the San Francisco Chronicle in 2004: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2004/08/15/INGMC85... A
Cheers,
Udi John (another former jazz guitarist)

John,
I fixed 'em for you.
With long URLs it is best to put the following codes before and after ....... {url} and {/url} with this "[" type of bracket, rather than this "{"
type. (sorry couldn't get it to display without this roundabout method)
Thanks for the links. I was particularly interested in the second one about "Muslim roots of the blues."
Regards,
Greg

I was just thinking the other day about what would an oudish improvisation on a pentatonic scale would sound like ... And how, if possible, would a
modulation or transition to and from other scales would sound like ...
Do these CDs have stuff like that .. ? Did any show or try something like this before .. ?

pentatonic scales on oud
Waw! Glad this topic has been brought up again. I'm a blues guitarest myself, and I also play the pentatonic scales, which are the primary elements of
blues, on the oud. When I play a basic 1/4/5 blues progression, I usually just have the oud playing a sort of bass line under the vocals. Transitions
are simple. What I do is slide between the 4 and the five. If you guys are interested, I'll play a small sample of some blues on oud.
