Here's the link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/OUD-ANTIQUE-1953-SEMPAT-PROFESSIONAL-SAZ-LUTE-G...

To my novice eye, it looks like the face has been sanded down, and I am guessing aggressively. You can see the darkeness around the mizraplek where it looks like they did not sand. Also, the entire area around the bridge appears darker, because it is hard to get right up to that area to sand (not that you should sand at all, of course). And I think they pretty much wiped out that diamond shaped ornament at 6 oclock below the central rosette.

When a face is only about 2mm thick, people don't realize how much damage they do. The purfling is only about 1 mm thick. I have one old oud where the face is tissue paper thin in one spot because somebody sanded it--there actually are a couple of very small holes as well. I hang onto it for historical reasons, but how I wish it wasn't sanded.

Are the roses in the small eyuns original? The material does not match the central rosette and the workmanship looks, well, sort of crude on those two small rosettes.

Jonathan, to add to this it would be nice to know how it sounds and how playable it is especially since it was bought sight unseen, unheard and not tried. Also would be nice to know if it is the real thing. It went for $899 plus shipping.

I don't know the winner, Andy. I know who he is (thanks), but I don't know him. If I get any details, I will pass them on.
