"Oud" CD from FM Records

Has anyone heard the CD "Oud - East Mediterranean Musical Instruments" on the FM Records label? (Not the same as the "Outi" CD on the same label.) It seems to be a compilation of tracks from different artists, but I have been unable to find a list of these artists so far.

Would be interested to hear people's opinions of this CD and whether it is worth buying.

Thanks

David

Download from eMusic.com

Hi David,

Check out: http://www.emusic.com do a search on "oud" and this album is the first one to come up. This web site is a subscripton based music download service but I've found some real gems on it. Not a huge selection of ou specific recording but they have an ever growing collection of middle eastern music of all kinds as well as some cool world beat and world fusion sorts of things. If you download only one album a month the service is worth it.

This particular album is pretty good – a lot of variety in traditional oud music from different regions. Some solo taksims as well as small ensemble playing in styles raging from arabic to turkish, greek and armenian. Unfortunately, if you download the album you don't get much info on the artists as there is not CD pamphlet.

Hi Lee

Thanks for the link. The audio clips sound good, but I would like to buy the CD rather than just the mp3s if possible, as hopefully there might be some info on each artist.

Have you actually downloaded the tracks? Sometimes it's difficult to tell what they are like from a 30-second clip, as you never know whether a cheesy synthesizer will kick in after 31 seconds!:D

By the way, I just ordered a nice CD by a Tunisian oud player called Ahmed el Kalai - have you heard this one yet?

All the best

David

http://www.studio52.gr/srch_all_en.asp?searcher=MEGALOI%20SYNTHETES...

Do you mean the one on this site?

I picked it up while I was in Istanbul, but haven't got around to listening yet. The copy I have is a small book with a bio and a description of the music in greek, french and english. The CD is at the back cover.

I really should get to it and the other CDs soon.

I've decided to listen to Kelai's CD ...

From the looks of the first two records, a Nahawand taksim and sama'i, I think it's going to be a delightful experience.

Yes I downloaded all the tracks - some are better than others but they are all pretty good -- no cheesy synthesizers! Buy the CD if you can... it would be nice to have the booklet.
