Thanks for the link Hassan.
On this clip, Marcel Khalifa's risha seems to extend a lot further than most other players.
Perhaps it was because he was playing unaccompanied and didn't need a lot of volume to compete with other instruments. Does anyone else have a
comment about this risha technique?
Regards,
Greg

Yeah, I noticed the same thing. He also seems to use more downstrokes only on faster passages vs. alternate picking. See for example the 1:00 mark in
taqasim1. I would imagine his pick would need to be quite stiff to be effective with that much extended.

The Lebanese luthier Albert Mansour had made ouds for Marcel Khalife, although I don't know if this particular one was also his work.

Khalife Technique
I've always been facinated with Marcel Khalife's risha technique. He has a great video documentary DVD out called "Voyageur" that is all about his
life and musical career. About 4 hours long - there is a lot of clips showing him playing. In many, he's using what appears to be a long horn risha,
in most cases he seems to hold it with the end coming out between his ring and little fingers. It also appears to be quite flexible as you can see it
wiggle in his hand between strokes or when he's resting. The the interview above he seems to be using a nylon risha similar to the turkish kind and
he's holding the risha in a more mormal fashion with the end extending out the back of the hand (not between the fingers). In the "Taksim" video
from his website you can see that he has a fairly straight wrist position, not bent towards the face as much as most oudists. Marcel does seem to have
a very delicate and variable attack with very clear articulation. He definitely has a unique style. Very fluid loose hand movements.

Hello Hassan,
unfortunately I could not open the video link. But I know many videos from him, saw him several times in concert and once met him personally. Always
he is playing a Mohamed Fadhel instrument, and as he said to me this is for him the "only" he likes to play. This is the model Munir Bashir palyed
finally, all members of Munir Bashisr's group "Al Bayrak" did play it like Raed Koshaba, Ali Hassan ... Marcel Khalife told me that he baught this
instrument from one player of this group who stopped playing.
btw. I do make this model. You ca see a video here with Raed Koshaba:

and more informations you can find here on my website:

Hello Mathias
did you made a try of this same oud but just with a fix bridge ?
I mean like this oud that can be hear at 19:33:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iR7WKgnkIA
If i catch well his explainaition it was a floater that has been broken, then repaired to a fix bridge system, keeping the original bracing of the
floater.
I really found the sound of this fix bridge version beautiful
