Pegs don't work well
Hi all you
I recently buy a new turkish oud. The problem is that some pegs are joined and others slaps. I spend months fighting with my oud without results. I'm
incapable to tunne it.
There are some tips to help me about the adjust of the pegs?
Any help will be apreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Rafa

Take all the pegs out and softly sand them with sand paper, than put them back, and press good while tuning. Pay attention that rolled end of string
does not push the peg out. Roll the ends of the strings in that way that they don;t touch the walls of peg box. If it does not help, buy a new set of
pegs (viola - violin?) and check if this particular oud is worth doing it...

Before you do that you migt want to add some compound to the pegs because sanding them might make them to loose if u accidently sand too munch.
There is stuff called peg dope, also someone told me you can make some residue with soap and chalk or something like that. research the forums for
more info.

Hola, Rafa.

DO NOT SAND THE PEGS!
Sanding will change the shape of the peg and if they were fitted properly, they will no longer work no matter what you do. Go to a music instrument
store and buy some peg dope used on violing pegs. Hill makes one that looks like a brown lipstick and works very well. Take each peg out - one at a
time so you don't get them mixed up, (each peg must go back into the same hole it came out of). Draw a line around the shaft of the peg where it meets
the pegbox wall. This will usually be a shiny band around the shaft of the peg. Insert the peg and turn it around in the hole to distribute the
compound. You only need to do this once. If this doesn't work the pegs may be ill fitted. If you can wiggle the peg when it is tight in the hole, then
one side of the pegbox hole is too big. This can only be corrected by refitting the peg, and the hole may have to be drilled out and a bushing
inserted. This is a job for an instrument repair technician with experience fitting pegs.
When tuning the peg must be pushed into the pegbox as it is turned to tighten the string. Otherwise it will slip. If the peg is stuck, you can push on
the small end as you turn it to loosen it.

Hi all
Thanks for your responses, I'm begening to see the light at the end off the tunnel
I have asked in the local music shop about peg compound and peg dope, they don't have it, but sure I can find it at a bigger town.
Thanks Marina for the tips about the manner of atach the strings at pegbox, I'm really new in this discipline and refitting the strings in the pegs
have improved the problem.
And thanks Dr. Oud, i read your message with a sand paper in one hand and a peg in the other, after read it I have reconsidered this posibility.
I will inform you about the results.
Hola Jazzchis, vaya sorpresa, buena sorpresa.
Now in English
