After playing the repaired (reconstructed) Bashir oud of Naser, I'm very skeptical to his Bashir ouds quality. The soundboard has a very weak structure and doesn't withstand the high string tension. But the sound is very Fawzy...

Best wishes

It look kinda fragile to me too but after trying one of Ahmad Mukhtar Bashir oud by Fawzy (the new version he got during the last oud meeting-fawzy bring 5 bashir oud with different style ribs), I think its really unique-the sound is loud and sustained! The neck is thiner than most oud which make it very confortable for me to move around the fingerboard. The belly/body size is just nice to hug when playing in any position (sitting or standing)

Yes I agree, I prefer the slim neck of Fawzy or Mohammad Fadel. Yaroub's neck:rolleyes: is little bit thicker but more stable. Is for me the 1st position where I find Mohammad's neck better:D

Hey man. Does he only make Turkish/Bachir ouds? Maybe we can narrow it down and contact some other oud makers and see if they know him. Most oud makers that I've known know of the others and know their locations (I dunno how willing they'd be to send you to someone else). I'm sure we can make a little project of it and find out the contact info for him. I hope I can be of help.

Z-

I'm pretty sure my teacher (Issa Boulos) is looking to sell his Foad Jihad Bashir Style. It's like the ones on Ronny's site. He'll sell it for a good price, I think. You can contact him through his website.

It depends on several factors; It will be more difficult for you if you use the Iraqi tuning with a higher string tension than what you normally have on your classical oud. You can also have other tunings and lower string tension. However, the most difficult part will be the eagle risha which needs a completely different posture, technique. Because Munir and Omar Bashir master the eagle risha doesn't mean that other materials aren't possible with different result . Shamma use plastic risha and many other use horn.

Oud meeting

Hi Zul

You mentioned an 'oud meeting' in your posting about Ahmed Mukhtar:

"It look kinda fragile to me too but after trying one of Ahmad Mukhtar Bashir oud by Fawzy (the new version he got during the last oud meeting"

Do you have any more information?

Best wishes

Hi

Ahmad was telling me how he end up buying 'new' Fawzy oud on the last oud meeting held last year. I know he got 2 bashir oud made by Fawzy. 1 with a plain bowl and a date written in arabic over the pick guard and 1 oud with a double thin line on the center of the bowl.

Fawzy was there to promote his 'new' design bashir model. He bring 5 with him and promote it to Ahmad Mukhtar. According to Ahmad the ribs is thinner and fawzy use some kind of material from inside to attach them together (linen mix something-Im not 100% sure).

I have a look at the new oud and it is different than the other 2 (I used to play with his 2 oud during lessons) Its very light and the finishing is amazing-the sound somehow louder than the 2 (really projected) the rest of the oud look the same than the other 2. I notice that the finishing of the pegs are not really well done (only the top part well polished) the rest are a bit uneven.

Ahmad told me that Fawzy is no longer live in Iraq-he is somewhere in the middle east country and its very hard to contact him-so he got lucky this time when fawzy approached him to sell those oud. I would be very gratefull if anybody can help me to contact Fawzy as Ahmad is too busy to do so.

Im not sure what happen to the other 4 oud that he bring with him.

Hi Zul

Do you know where the oud meeting was held, or who attended it? I know that there was one in Jordan last year - see this page:
