New ouds for me

I received my 'new' ouds from board member Todda today. The Ghadban oud is probably the best musical instrument I have owned... and I've owned A LOT over the years. The amount of overtones produced by this oud are unbelievable. I didn't even know an oud could sound like this in person.

I need to put new strings on Jameel's old sukar but I think it is going to sound really good. It seems darker than the Ghadban with a more robust low end. I'm interested to see how it responds with newer strings. Also, the curly maple strip on the back is beautiful. Great job Jameel.

sorry about the messy room hehe. I've been too busy playing the ouds to clean.

ps Thanks to Mike, Mav, Todda, Oudman, and everyone else I've bugged over the last few months in my quest for a new oud. I really appreciate all the help.

Make the most of it

Hi Jason

I'm sure you'll make the most of it. I'm thinking of a new oud myself when I can afford it and I like the look of these (especially the Ghadban). The neck looks wider and longer than my Turkish oud and I would probably enjoy that. What are the neck dimensions on your new oud - width at nut, width at bridge, scale length?

I may pester the forum more for this like you.

Kind regards - can't wait to hear them from you!!:airguitar:

Hey Ararat, the neck is indeed beefier and longer than a Turkish oud. I think the string length is 60.2cm on the Ghadban and 62cm on the Sukar. I'm not sure about the nut and bridge widths but they're very comfortable.

I'll try to do a little soundclip of the Ghadban tonight, I need to wait on new strings for the Sukar.

I foresee my grades going downhill for a few weeks while I get to know my ouds :)

Sounds good

Sounds good Jason. If you could find time to measure the neck width at the nut and across the strings at the bridge that would be great. I've just ordered a new acoustic guitar from a luthier in Wales so these details are occupying a part of my mind that I'm sure my wife and kids think would be better used for other means - so the more anoraky the better!! Look forward to your sound clips, I like your playing.

enjoy your ouds

Leon:)

here's a sample of the ghadban. Sorry for the poor quality, I had to compress it a lot to get the file size down. Sorry for the intonation too, still adjusting to the longer scale length :)

I have been playing oud a year but I've played music and other fretless instruments for a long time. The intricacies of taqasim and proper modulation are still a big mystery to me but hopefully I'll have a lot more time to devote to them soon.

Thanks for the comments... I really love the sound of the ghadban too, I just wish my mic could pick up the overtones that this oud produces. Notes ring for days hehe
