On a lot of ouds, I see some sort of transparent material covering the inlay bands around the central rosette. It looks brushed on. What is this?

You can test the fiinish with a few simple methods, a q-tip dipped in warm water rubbed on the area will remove some if it is hide glue. use acetone to test the finish
