Hold the oud like classical guitar?
What do you think about holding oud like classical gutar? Like- to rise a left leg and suport the oud wuth right one. Suprisingly, the back becomes
strait... 
I'm not sure about this, but....

I have been recently using my right leg to support the oud while lifting my left leg. I would not say I have. been holding it like a classical
guitar.
The purpose of me doing this is to create a pocket in the shape of the bowl to keep it stationary. the oud is on my right leg tucked against my
left.
My body frame makes it hard for me to hold the oud in a standard way and wrap my right arm in the proper position.
I have a thick muscular frame build and I am not very tall so this has abled me to wrap my arms around the oud, it is still not perfect but a work in
progress. i might go back to the original way.
As for your thoughts, I assume ultimatley you want to keep the oud at least level because the way i see it, the elbow must be remained stationary
where as the wrist remains in motion. keeping the strings level allows equal distance in motion and less strain on the wrist. i dunno if thats right
but thats my idea.

hey guys
I have the same problom i am short and stuby butmy arms are big bc i work out so its hard to play my larger ouds. thats what i am looking for a
small loud bowl like a nahat relpica or a gamil oud something to that sort
all my egyptian ouds are very big

Very natural position for players who use all four fingers, perpendicular to the strings which requires neck to be closer to the shoulder height, thus
making a change of the keys (any) very easy. BUT, that introduces new fingering in the oud playing which affects articulation and phrasing, so outcome
would be closer to flamenco than to the traditional style where layback tomb hanging technique is used. Hmm, hmm… White man can not play oud (and
basketball)???

Ahmad Fathi Holds the oud like this
If you check the oud videos on this site you can find Ahmad Fathi holding the oud with his left leg elevated resting the oud across both legs. It
seems to work for him brilliantly.
I've experimented with this method myself but I keep coming back to the more traditional approach because I can't seem to get as relaxed a position
for my right hand. In the end you have to try different things and use what works for you! I wouldn't worry about using four fingers or not – either
way it will work fine for the left hand. It will force a different position for your right arm and wrist so the angle of attack to the strings will be
a little different. You might find that your right shoulder will be more relaxed so it might be worth adapting to it. Good luck.

I agree with you lee, the biggest conflict of playing like this is i have a hrd time getting my right hand relaxed but it seems so much better for my
right arm and shoulder because i can wrap around the oud at the proper angle. the right wrist though has comfort issues. I always feel like the oud
is falling out of my lap and subsconciously i press extra hard on my left hand fingering as a sympethetic way of holding the oud in place.

yes i have been trying that except my oud seems to be more leveled than angled up. while crossing my legs like ahmed is better for my playing i have
a problem of crossing me legs in longs periods of time. ill update u guys on what i figure out

Yeh ui see but when i try to cross my legs i fell extreamly uncomferable and i am just to short do if i did it like simon i wopuld die bascily if you
place the oud in the middle of both slanted up it will work i think. not by crossing your legs.

ther are a few makers who have made them for customers on this board.
shehata in egypt
ghadban in lebanon
and dimitris in greece
all have made nahat copys although i wouldnt know who can make the closes SOUNDING nahat oud.
i think nazih ghadban has one for sale currently, oudnazihghaadban.com is his site.
or u can contact sheata at mauriceouds.com
and dimitris has site too but i dont know it off the top of my head.
