string tension on iraqi oud

Dear Friends,

I have just bought a new 11 strings oud, scale 62 cm, floating bridge (iraqi style) ; as new, it is tune to F (single)-A-D-g-c-f ;i need some advice on the two following points :
1/ if i want to use more traditionnel arabic tuning with a low C , i have to lower the pitch, and then the strings are to "floppy" and the oud is not playable that way: so, do you think it's better to try with heavier gauge of strings ?
2/if i decide to keep the actual tuning in "F" , what string gauge should I use (because I don't find any set of strings from labella and other common brands who sell a set specifically for that "F" tuning)

Regards

Pascal

hi p vanderwielen

my advise:-

1- get a heavier gauge strings
2- "F" 0.44 (aquila nylgut) works fine on my iraqi oud 11 n 13 courses, 57 n 59cm scale

good luck

Also, Jameel has a set already which has the low C, ie C F A D G C - its the Aquila nylegut set.

Aquila strings are also available directly from Aquila Italy or from Haluk.
It depends on where you come from.
;)Your name seems more... european (Nederland, Belgium???)

Pascal, please give Pyramid lute strings a try, I use them myself and the quality and sound are superior Aquilla.
You can order Pyramids strings from several places here in Europe and check out Matthias Wagners website where you also can download a catalogue about several oud stringings and in fact Matthias is the first who share this kind of info on the web

Matthias Wagner Luthier

Best wishes
