Learning Arabic Oud
Well I have had my Oud for about three months now. I bought one from Nileshop.net whom I cannot say enough good things about. I was in Saudi, Iraq,
and Kuwait for a little over a year during Desert Storm as an American Soldier.
At the time I was a guitar player and later studied music theory in college and majored in jazz Guitar. I always was intrigued with Middle Eastern
music and was quite curious about semitones and the OUD. 10 years after college I finally have bought me an oud and I am beggining to learn.
I only speak English and there does not appear to be any Oud methods for Arabic Oud that I can understand. Is this correct? I have been going to
Maqamworld.com and learning Maqam and just doing improvisation over the scales.
Another member of this forum told me to learn many Longas and it would help me to learn. I also see there is the Cameron Powers book and CD that
teaches Maqams but I am not sure if that is what I need.
Does not seem to be any teachers in the Houston Texas area. Anyone have any ideas on how to educate myself on this instrument?
1.) What are the basic Maqams I should learn first?
2.) Are there certain songs that are a must for an Oud players repetoire? I can't just sit around improvising Maqam all the time but I am not sure of
what songs I should start with.

this is a book for beginers offered by our good friend Jameel. there have been good things said about it.
3rd advice... find a teacher. You may think there arent any around you but you can find some in houston Iam sure. There is a guy on the forrums named
Hatem Afandi who is from houston, He is probably a good person to ask. Make a search and U2U him.
Go to the arab grocery store and ask around you could probably find someone to at least recomend you some CDs of classical arabic musians, Like oum
Koulthoum, Farid el Atrache etc..
