I know this isnt strictly about oud, but I noticed while listening to Tahmila Suznak by Shaheen that the rhythm changes between malfuf and maqsoum. Brian Prunka's music states that it's all malfuf, but I can hear some changes. Anyone know exactly when each is done, or is it just by taste. By the way, it's a great song.

Jameel, I'm basically guessing here... in the tahmilah, the intro is done, and then another short part... and then it goes into this C C C C C C G.... C C C C C C G... and then someone has a solo right then, I believe. Right when it starts at C C C C C C G, I believe that's where the iqaat changes. Now, I don't know much of iqaat, so bare with me if I incorrectly answered your question.

I'm just doin it from my head, so I don't really know if it sounds like this or not. I'm not a master of the tahmilah, and far off from a master of notes. By the way, E- means E half flat (like in Bayati on D, and Rast). Hope someone can confirm this notation. If I'm wrong, be my guest and correct it.

You're right, it does change usually. I've heard people use do it differently on different occasions, but the most common is to use malfuf for everything except the responses in the call-and-response section.
I need to get corrections up for some of those charts, but I installed Finale 2004 and it screwed everything up . . .
for anyone who downloaded those charts, here are some typos/corrections I've noticed:
Longa Shahnaz: should be b half-flat in m.39
Longa Nihavent: m.6-7,9 are F#, there are some other minor changes that are hard to explain . . .

i just reread my post, and i'm not sure if it was clear . . .
In tahmilah suznak, the call-and-response section alternates between malfuf (soloist) and maqsum (ensemble).

I have several versions of the piece. It seems that the rhythm may be varied somewhat according to taste, although it should change along with the phrasing of the melody.
Here are some alternative ways of playing it: A. use maqsum for mm.1-10, malfuf for mm.11-16 etc.
B. use maqsum for the whole first part, and malfuf for the entire call-and-response section

The notes that I posted above are the transposed version of this one. Therefore, the notes may not match up with the way Simon Shaheen plays it entirely, but it is from the same key that he plays it on.

*Note: this version is on a different key, but I just posted it as a reference to how I've heard the original interpretation of the song.
