'La Musique Arabe'
Hi
Just to let everyone know that the six-volume series of books by Rodolphe d'Erlanger called 'La Musique Arabe' (from the 1930s-40s) has
recently been reissued. They are available from
http://www.geuthner.com/index.htm
I have ordered Volume 5, which contains Erlanger's detailed studies of over 100 maqams, so I can let anyone know more info when I receive the
book.

It seems as though he has worked with a lot of al-Farabi's stuff. It will be interesting to see how this develops.

Hi TP
The first four volumes were translations by Erlanger (from Arabic into French) of key works by al-Farabi, Avicenna, Safi ud-Din and Muhammad
al-Ladhiki. Volume 5 deals with maqams and volume 6 with rhythms.
Erlanger's name keeps popping up wherever I look, so I seems a lot of the accepted theory and description of maqams can be attributed to him. I
know that he classified the ajnas into 17 different genres, and also catalogued different maqams from different parts of the Middle East, but I'm
not sure how much useful info I'll be able to get from his book. Looks like I'll have to get the old French dictionary out though!
All the best
David
