Wanting to buy an Oud

Hi,

I am a professional cellist, new to the oud and wondering a few things before purchasing...

So, can you tell me where to go to look for them? What is a good price to pay for one that sounds good, is in good condition but not one that has fancy decorations? I mean I want one that is easy to play and sounds good, but it is not important to me to have diamond studded instruments. Do you know what I mean?

What are the potential gotchas when purchasing an oud?

Do you recommend the Egyptian or the Turkish style or some other one?

Thanks, Scott

Turkish ouds are smaller and tuned higher. Arabic ouds are generally larger and have a punchier tone. The general quality of Turkish ouds is more consistant due I believe to the system of apprenticeship absent in the Arabic cultures. Cheap ouds (under $600) are often made in Pakistan, and are untunable and unplayable and made with inferier materials. They are useful as wall ornaments only. You can browse the forum to get some idea of what makers are reliable and how their customers like their instrumetns. The characteristics are very personally weighed, but the workmanship and material quality if what you need to look for.

Check out Nazih Ghadban- oudnazihghadban.com - He is in Lebanon, and his ouds vary in range and style (everything from Nahat remakes to Original masterpieces).

His work is amazing- I have one and am very happy with it-
