mohogany tops

I saw this Turkish oud on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/PROFESSIONAL-TURKISH-STRING-INSTRUMENT-OUD-UD-N...
It appears to have a mahogany top. Has anyone had any experience with mahogany for a top, strength, sound, etc.

Andy,
I also saw this oud with interest as I had never seen a mahogany topped oud before. I have several mahogany topped guitars (as well as dozens of spruce tops and five or six cedar tops) and I would say the sound falls somewhere in between cedar and spruce ( at least for guitars) with the cedars having quite a bit more bass (a coarse generalization as tonewood quality and bracing details are just as important). In any case I have one handmade mahogany top guitar with x-bracing that has a really special sound that I've never heard from either spruce or cedar so I know it's possible to use mahogany as a good tonewood.

Thanks Harry, I don't recall ever seeing a Turkish oud with a mahogany sound board. I am wondering how thick the top should be on an oud for stability and strength without compromising sound.

I love it-

I just wish they could tune the oud before they put that youtube clip on the ebay site-

mahogany is half of my favorite oud, my Ghadban- my Les Paul is mahogany, and I have a classical guitar completely of mahogany(except the top - spruce-). great idea, I think- what do the luthiers think about the top? Dr. Oud? Mr. Ghadban? Mr. Turunz? etc.....?

tarik:shrug:

this could get interesting...

Tarik, I agree with you on the Youtube clip. Don't think it was flattering to the oud. It would be great to get some input from the real pros on this.
