"Beyond Traditions" - Ziad Ahmadie

"Beyond Traditions" - a CD by composer and oud player Ziad Ahmadie and Fun Jan Shai band.

The oud is the main instrument playing around and with many rythms from Brazil to Cuba to Flamenco and a superb oud version of Duke Ellington's Caravan.
A nice combination of oud, piano, palmas, cajun and congas.

The CD is published by "Incognito", a small lebanese independent label trying to publish non commercial artists and film makers (on the DVD side of the label)

Ziad is a great oud player, he's also a singer and a composer trying many different styles and a very nice person, he was featured on a post by Zalzal a while ago:

With his permission I am posting a track
Track 7 : Semai Nakess - Ziad Ahmadie on oud & Tarek Yamani on piano:

Semai Nakass sounds like Samai Shad Araban.

This an original composition by Ziad, "samai'i Nakess" means Sama'i incomplete and it is called this way because it is an 8/8 instead of the traditional 10/8 for sama'is but it ended up really incomplete as the CD producer took out the 4th khana because it made the piece "too long and complicated" (!producers....)
I will ask Ziad when I meet him if he has a full recording for the piece as well as if he's willing to give the notation.

I am posting a full version of "Samaii Nakess", it is a recording from a live performance at the Babel Theater in Beirut.

it has on minute 3.00 the 4th khana (a tricky and complex one) that was missing from the original CD version but present in the abv music sheet.

This is a Shad Araban samaii and it has some similarities with the famous Jamil Bey Shad Araban samaii

I just listen to the "Samaii Nakess".
The two versions. They sound different. The duo oud/piano on the 'incomplete" first mp3 takes a very lovely place in the sound space, both transparence from the oud and depth with the piano part. I like it very much and I'm happy to find the music sheet....
