Unusual Risha Technique

Listen to this guys... its the most unusual way of holding the oud and the risha I have ever seen!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjgozomLcLs

he does get a nice sound out of his oud though...
Iam not sure about the mechanics behind playing like this....
probably would be tiring on the shoulder at the end of a session.

Hi Samir,

This is my country man the exeptionally talented Awad Ahmodi, from the Sudan I am not sure if he was born blind or it happend after birth but as I heared he was from his very early hildhood known to be blind in both eyes.
Awad taught himself the oud after trying his uncles oud and instantly fell in love with it and from there on as he is a good listener he excelled, its obvious he have his own way of holding the risha and the oud and also his techniques, he plays Sudanese music on the khomasi scale mostly and although Sudans first language is Arabic, but rarely musicians play maqams and sadly our music still lacking behind in terms of exposure to the out side world....
Awad currently plays with the National Sudanese Orchestra and accompaning musicians as well
Even though many Sudanese musicians are known worldwide but still not enough, one of the well known ones in the middle East the late Sid Khalifa and one of his very famous songs was Al Mambo Al Sudani and Ezaiakoum Kaifenakoum and others. Also Mohammed Wardi, Mohammed Al Amin, Abd Elkareem, Abd Al Gadir Salem and many others who contributed greatly to the Sudanese music.
There are also many Sudanese musicians in the United States and Canada doing their best, one great Sudanese composer in California currently by the name of Yousif Almousely as well as Ali Alsegaid and Mustafa Alsuni between Europe and the States and Alwafir Shaikh Al Din.
And lets not forget the late greatest Hamza Alla Din.
Me too in a humble way I am hopefull to do my bit to contribute to my culture musically as avocalist and oud player, sadly due to work load, family life and lack of practice I am slowly draging myself to that goal.

And being with you guys on the forum I learnet quite a lot.
Samir thanks for fishing this video out, I promis you I will try and find more clips for Awad and others.
As you can see I share the same popular name in Sudan with this musician its normally Awad El Kareem as in my case.

many thanks Samir and I hope I shed some light into this subject.

Regards,

Awad
