Bass Oud
Although I had heard about the existance of such creature, I never imagined it would look like this....I came across this clip while youtubing just
before. Interesting little ensemble...As for the bass oud, to me it sounds no difference to a double bass - but the Eastern version I guess
heres the link....

anyone can tell what's the acoustic difference between these tow? (I talk about this bass oud and the double bass). I've already seen a bass oud with
normal dimensions but never so big! )

I like this ensemble. Nice idea.
But I can't resist.....that bass oud has me rolling on the floor! How could you walk on stage with that thing and keep a straight face? I can see them
backstage flipping coins for who gets stuck with the bass oud for the night.

I know a regular-looking bass oud was shown on the forum before, but I can't find it. I want to remember whether they are pick-able, so to speak. I'm
also wondering whether bass strings with appropriate tensions can be put on a regular oud (I'm doubting, but thought I'd ask.)
(Incidentally, the manner in which the bass oud in the video is held is interesting. I have tried a couple of times with my oud but out of play, but
it turned out to be playable. Odd, but playable. But you might as well play with your fingers in the regular position. Still, as Jameel notes, the
bass oud in the video does take you by surprise. :-))
Also incidental - or tangential if you may - does any one know of fretless acoustic bass guitars?
Regards,
Hamid

Yes....
I wonder if the strings are in courses?? but I doubt it because it will be it harder to pluck I guess. And Samir...yes sukar's galore, their a
lebanese group I think. But maybe they got no choice, mitl 7oukoumat la7oud lol. (sorry couldnt help it )
Amatha - acoustic fretless bases do exist, I've seen it once used in a Marcel Khalifeh trio, but now that a double bass is been used to accompany him,
I think it works much better.

Finally got round to looking at that. Looks like a wooden bathtub with strings. When you can do the sort of stuff with an ordinary double bass that
Garcia-Fons does, why?....
The sehrud is big but you can still hold it in an ud-like playing position.
