Hi idoromano- sounds like you are on your way! for me, what helps is a lot of listening to the more experienced and professional oud players do their thing with maqam/taqsim. you can learn a lot from close listening, so get some oud CDs or watch a lot of oud videos and so on. A great site for helping to understand maqam/Arabic music theory in general is:
http://www.maqamworld.com/maqamindex.html
Playing oud and being in the army must be a bit hard- may the time come when we ALL live in peace and harmony without fighting. more time to play oud then.

Hi Idoromano, try putting Yurdal Tokcan, or any one of your favourite Turkish oud players in the youtube search box, and take it from there;) Also as I've mentioned somewhere before, we have a member with about the best site on Turkish music and Makamlar around, - http://www.adamgood.com/turkish_nota/ have fun:D
