lecture at UCLA / Munir Beken

this came to my email today:

Stone Records and Parallel Universes: Music and Globalization in Turkey
A faculty lecture by MÜNIR BEKEN, UCLA Ethnomusicology.

Thursday, October 25
12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
10383 Bunche Hall

Münir Beken is an Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at UCLA. His career
spans theory, composition, ethnomusicology, and performance. As a composer,
he has written a state-commissioned ballet suite for orchestra, won awards
for film music, and scored television documentaries both domestically and
internationally. His scholarly work focuses on modal theory; he is also
conducting research on musical globalization and the phenomenology of music.
He has published in Ethnomusicology, a premier journal in the field, and
contributed to The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. He was one
of the founding members of the State Turkish Music Ensemble. As a soloist on
the ud, he has performed in venues across the U.S. and has recorded a solo
CD with Rounder Records.

Wish I could be there. He is not only an amazing musician, composer, and all around human being, but he is a wonderful teacher and lecturer as well.

Enjoy!

I just took pictues of Munir

I just got back from a photo session with Munir. He needed a headshot for a UCLA thing and I got him in the studio sitting down with his oud... oh my god!

I'll post some photos and hopefully a little snippet of taksim... absolutely amazing guy. Really wonderful warm person and beautiful soulfull music. Give me a couple of days to pull some stuff together and you'll see (and hear)!

Lee that's great we are eager to see/hear. As BIG a snippet of a taksim as you can post, please!

He is a master, I'm so glad that he has relocated to UCLA. I think this will give a boost to interest in Turkish music in the US.

Münir's Music

OK so here's a Taksi from the photo shoot. You can hear the studio flash going off and at one point I give Munir some directions. The sound is somewhat compressed but still cool.
