Advice
I have recently started to play oud and have up til now used a basic beginner's oud bought in Cairo. I am now about to buy a better one. My teacher
brought a nice solo oud from Aleppo, Syria. Despite, the stronger and clearer resonance, I somehow prefer the classic "Egyptian sound" which has a
different timbre (just as I prefer Riad El-Sunbati and Farid before Munir El Bashir). Please give some advice on good oud manufacturers in Cairo
(where I have relatives) and other considerations for a purchase. I am prepared to invest around USD 750.
Many thanks
Andreas in Stockholm, Sweden

Look at this page.
you will find at the bottom a nice list of famous oud makers.
also you could look in the buy and sell section. many members sometimes have very nice ouds for sale.

Thanks for this info Samir!
I get the impression that it is not just about personal taste, but also that there are some specific genreral characteristics of ouds from different
areas in the Middle East. Is there someone who can elborate more on this?
Best & thank you

hello Andreas- there are many characteristics that come into any oud, even two ouds by the same maker may sound quite different. many of the questions
you ask have been asked before, and you can find some answers in the new FAQ thread: http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=6809
It sounds like you are looking for a fixed bridge 'Egyptian sound' oud as compared to the floating Bashir type? For 750 bucks you ought to be able to
find something nice. If you got relatives in Cairo, then one oud maker worth looking into who is there is Maurice Shehata. He can make you an oud to
your specs, within your budget. I'm sure other members of the forum will offer more advice on who you might want to contact, and there is the "buy and
sell" section Samir mentions to check out. A member worth contacting who might be able to offer more advice who is also in Sweden is Ronny
Andersson.Good luck.
