my first concert with my new oud by Nazih
Salamat everyone- the World Music Society here at Cambridge University just held a concert last Saturday eve. One of the performers ( she's the one
singing in the photos) was looking for an oud player. As I was the only oud player in town I got the job! There were several groups of performers, including classical Hindu/Indian and Greek musicians. Mostly all students.
The concert was a real success, but the REAL star of the show was my Sada El Rouh ( echo of the spirit/soul) made by Nazih Ghadban. It has 13 strings,
and I find this oud just magical. Great tone, wonderful sustain, beautiful to look at and so nice to have that low C plus the high F strings there
when you want them. I can't say enough about this lovely oud, Nazih's craftsmanship, and how friendly he is to work with. My playing has improved
since having this oud, and it is a true work of art.
Just made a moe recent sound clip and put it in the 'members sound clip' section of the forum. It's done on my mobile phone, it's raw! here is the
link to the soundfile:
http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?tid=8369&pa...
some photos of the concert, then some photos of this lovely oud.

This is the lady who was looking for an oud player. She sings very nicely and is studying history, specializing in Islamic Spain.

Sada El Rouh
Here is the real star- my Sada El Rouh made by Nazih Ghadban. The ribs are Rosewood and old walnut, spruce top, ebony fingerboard, 58.5 scale.

The calligraphy on the pickguard says 'Al Salam'; the Peace.
In the centre of the rosette Nazih carefully made the calligraphy in bone which says 'Sada El Rouh'

Sada El Rouh. The name means "Echo Of The Spirit"- when I play this oud it truly feels like a direct line to my heart and soul.

Congratulations on the new Nazih Ghadban oud, Matthew.
It is certainly a very fine instrument and it fits you like a glove.
Congratulations also on the concert gig. It sounds (and looks) like it was a splendid event.
Regards,
Greg

Hi Matthew,
Congratulations for the new Nazih oud, it looks really nice. I am windering what is
the scale length of the oud, is it 58.5 or bigger? it looks to me it has bigger scale.
I am windering if nazih making small scales?
Thanks

Dubai244.
Although Matthew is the best entitled to answer, the sada el rouh is 58.5 cm as far as I can remember from the maker's website.
I think Mr. Ghadban made this oud a bit shorter so it can withstand the 13 string tension.
Has he ever made a nice 13 string oud with a normal bridge and a 60cm vibrating length? Probably yes, but I am not sure...

Hi Oud Freak -yes, the string scale is 58.5. The bowl is 50cm X 37cm, a very nice size. In discussing the specs for this oud with Nazih, I was
inquiring about a 60cm scale length. He would have made a Sada El Rouh to 60cm if I wanted. You can see he makes ouds to various string scales on his
website. This is the 4th Sada El Rouh he has made, and I think he made them all with the 58.5 scale, as part of this oud models unique features. I
went with the 58.5 as its very comfortable to play (said to be the string scale Nasser Shamma uses) and I don't think it has to do with any more
tension from 13 strings. You can ask Nazih if you want more information!

Yes indeed! I think this sada el rouh is one of his best, at least aesthetically, since I couldn't download your soundfile!
I think I said once that a soundfile is important but not enough since a oud (according to me, it is a personal opinion) must better be heard live.
Anyway mabrouk for your nice oud.
Regards.

thanks dubai, oud freak and rebetostar.
It is an amazing instrument, and challenegs me to try and play better all the time. With the oud's name of 'echo of the spirit/soul', that is a tall
order to live up to!
