Hello Kata,
I have to say that version of Czardas is possibly the worst thing I have ever heard played on oud! He murdered that piece, thanks Salem!
His oud is not in tune and he is not in tune, what does it mean to even ATTEMPT to play these phrases when he cant execute them properly. People will
say at least he's trying, well I would try harder and then put ity on his website when he has it right. It saids his the 'oud guru' on his site, near
enough is not good enough for a guru. For Elisa and Zourouni varations are the same deal, play them properly or dont! He was totally out of tune. And
that fake synthesiser orchestra was so corny and bad. Im sticking to the greats thanks!
Czardas means nothing when I can have a cup of tea listening to a Farid taqasim. The Arab culture is full of beauty and technique just listen to the
greats, no use playing novelty pieces on oud if they truly mean nothing to the Arab world and theyre not played well either...
Sorry me ranting again,
Just being honest James

You are very right, James. These western classical versions played on the oud are quite ridiculous. I can't understand why some oriental musicians try
to legitimate themselves playing western music when they don't have educated their ear on the tempered scales and their instruments are not designed
for it.
The oriental music has a fabulous tradition on improvisation and that's what I like to hear when I listen to oriental instruments.

Hey James,
yes these pieces of salem abdel karim seem to survive bad conditions. Cruise missles I guess). Totally agree with you, ridiculous to play such thing and post them on his website. If he's a real professional he's not allowed to do
that. Anyone one us, a non professional, can do it, try it, post it, say, hey guys how to ameliorate this passage, and so on. But a professional
playing out of tune, passages not well executed, posted on his website, you're right, totally inacceptable.
Charbel is better no?

Hey kata
I am not a fan of none of these, but surely Charbel is much much better.
I am a fan of the first part of JamesOud post where he expersses my thought much better than I do, really! The second part is what I am 100% against.
But it is of course a personal opinion.

Ouuuuuuud,
No one, as far as I know, have tried to do pure western muisic on Oud, except Mehmet Polat when he played Paganini's (videos are on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OJw7u-aQ0b4, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVJ43PvzTc8&feature=user). You feel that these pieces are not for the Oud, althought Mehmet execution is
impressive. From the playing of Charbel e.g I guess he chose western music that is mainly melodic, and with nice melodies. Farid el atrache used lot
of tango in his music and they fit very well with the arabic music mood. I recall "ya zahratan fi khayyali" or "Albi w moftaa7ou"...etc. Abdel wahhab
too, lot of tango. It all comes to choose a nice, romantic melody that fits with the arabic mood of romance, sadness, "chagan" (don't know word in
English). Czardaz fits in this mood too, and most of the european gypsy music
which gave rise to the classical western music.

On the subject of western music played on the oud, a friend of mine went to Syria recently and I asked her if she could try and get me a CD by Farhan
Sabbagh. She couldn't find it but brought me something by a father/son duo (I won't name them because I can't find the CD and don't want to get
personal), father playing oud and buzuk, son on keyboards. It included such classics as 'hotel california' and even the more contemporary 'hit me baby
one more time'. Not a pleasant listening experience.

No, I don't know him. But he's an AWFUL player. Kidding aside, Nahawand taqsim
played by JT are lovely but different from what Mohamadd abou zekry is playing.
