Sabri Goktepe
Anyone heard of an oud maker from Ankara named Sabri Goktepe? I just purchased an oud built by him in the early '80's. I should recieve it
this friday. If anyone has any knowledge of his ouds it would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Douglas,
The man is very well known for the quality of his work. You lucked out if you didn't know about him.
Look at David Parffit's page and you will see one of his ouds. He is referred to as "Sabri Usta" (Usta and Ustaz are titles for highly
skilled highly educated teachers).
Maybe the spelling of the name got you, His name is usually spelled:
Sabri Goketepe or Goktepe

The oud was built in 1980, spruce top, ebony pegs, and two internal pickups.

Are you playing acoustic or electric here ? If acoustic it sounds fantastic.
Interesting point. The two small rosettes look a little inconsistent with the work of Sabri. They look more like Syrian work and are thicker than the
main rosette which is very delicate. Did they replace them when they put in the pickups ?

That was acoustic. Im looking into an amplifier. Ive seen a few posts sugesting types of amps. If anyone has any input on that. But yeah now that you
mention it the small rosettes dont match. Ill have to ask about that. They seem to be made out of the same material as the main though

Congrats on this beautiful oud. I see you've added the clear plastic guards on for protection. Very cool, and the sound is very nice.

Douglas, if your going to get an amp,
get a Roland. They Roland amps work verry well with acoustic instruments.

Douglas, 100W or more is the standard for club playing. If you're playing with other instruments like keyboard, percussion, it's even
better to have a combination of your amp and a pa system.
There are many great amps available. Personally, I've tried Roland and I feel the SWR series (Strawberry Blonde -1 channel-50W and California
Blonde - 2 independent channels-100W) are much superior to it. There are many brands to choose from though, and Fishman just came out with a single
channel acoustic amp with a combined 250W output.

I second Mav's appraisal of the SWR amps, I have a Strawberry Blonde (40W) and the oud sounds great through it. Currently my primary amp is a
Walter Woods (100W), which I like better, but they're difficult to get (handmade, waiting list was over a year last I checked).
Roland has a great "acoustic" amp, but it weighs about 65 pounds, which is totally impractical as far as I'm concerned.
However, I'd say that 100W is unnecessary for most club playing. Any place big enough that 35-50W isn't enough should have its own sound
system. I guess the only time this might not be true is if you're playing with very loud (e.g., rock) drumset players.
A preamp for your pickup will help you get the most out of your amplifier.

Douglas, your Sabri oud looks great. Multi K your Sabri looks just like mine (photos at David's site) except the rosettes are a little
different. Mine is very light with great action. Very easy to play. Enjoy it

Thank you all. I love it so much. The bowl on it isn't as deep as my other Turkish oud so its much easier for me to hold.

Hey Douglas. You won't need the Roland acoustic amp. You can use the kc100 or the kc300 keyboard
amps.

Get ready for a ton of questions when you go to Guitar Center! I took my oud there when I was shopping for an amp and had people coming up and asking
what’s that thing; can I play it; how do you tune it?, etc.
Pretty amusing!
Another amp that sounds good, at least on my oud, was the Fender Acoustisonic—or something like that… If I remember correctly, there are two
different models available. In the end, I wound up just using my bass stack, although 500w is bit overkill!
Your new oud is a beauty.
