Maqam Lami
Could someone confirm for me how maqam lami works? I can't seem to find it on any of the web resources. There was reference to it on these forums, but
I can't find an answer. As I understand from listening to recordings, if its based on A, the scale goes A, Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G. Is this correct? If so,
I think this would make it roughly equivalent to the Western Locrian mode, which usually only exists theoretically because it doesn't contain a
perfect 5th.

DaveH,
the lami scale is equivalent the scale of the B mode (b c d e f g a b'). The scale u propose is also correct.

There is a great samai lami by Zallach al Queiti, try to find it. Lami is a simple maqam, it starts on the fourth degree, and gradually moves down to
the tonic at the end. Modulaitons (on the tonic or fourth degree) are strictly bayat, saba, or saba zamzama, or lami transposed a whole fourth up.

Thanks for that Jassim, oudfreak, masel. As you say, it's simple but it's pretty, isn't it? I was going to ask about modulations. I like bayat. Masel,
what about Sikkah on the quarter tone below the tonic (ie A/b from lami on A). Somehow I liked this but not sure if it's generally acceptable.

Segah is not part of maqam lami, though it sounds intersting combination I'll try it. Lami is very restricted modulation wise, from lami A you could
modulate to bayat, saba or saba zamzama on A or D, as well as lami on D like I said. I think kurd isn't even concidered a part of lami (though they
modes of each other).

Here is a very old song for Nazem el ghazali, singing the Lami scale (notice the bayat modulation during Mawaal singing). The song begans at 4:50 min

Here's a great song by Zalach al-Qweiti, sung by Salima Murad, it's called ya nuba'at al reihan, also in lami.

Thanks both for the references - they're really helpful. D
PS if anyone has sheet music for the semai lami by Zalakh al Kuwaiti that Masel refers to, I'd love it if it could be shared.
