New Oud, new player
So my Dad went to Egypt on a business trip and brought back an oud. I am very eager to play it, but I am having trouble with tuning since there are
many different ways to tune an oud. Specifically I would like to learn misirlou but I don't know what the tuning for that song is either.
I am a guitarist but I am not sure if I am suppose to use a pick or not. What sort of plectrum am i suppose to use?

Hi there, nice looking Oud! Do you know who the maker is? Maybe it says inside?
Standard Arabic tuning is CGDAFC from Treble to Bass, but since you only have 5 strings (most play with 6, but still alot play with 5). Most songs use
this tuning, and it is the most common and easier to learn as there is more learning materail that use this tuning. Try CGDAF from treble to bass,
from the white strings to the single red string. You can use http://www.tunemybass.com/ to help you, if you click on Custom Tuning and drag the notes, it's for Guitar and Bass, but can be used with the
Oud.
Arabic Players use a Risha, Turkish use Mizrap, I think they're the same just a different name, but I'm not too sure. A good place to buy a Mizrap
would be http://www.khalafoud.com/picks.htm
If you scroll down to the new 'Talonite' see-through picks, you can get 4 for $5. I think it's a pretty good price. I got some and they are brilliant,
play all day everday and they will never break, but you need to use sandpaper to shape them first.

Hey!
What a nice present from Egypt!
I recommend you tune it in Arabic tuning, and use a risha/mizrab -or just make one-

For miserlou, check out this site - they have a simplified arabic songs cd that makes it pretty easy to learn pieces from. Also, check Youtube.
