Electric Oud

I am looking for an inexpensive Oud. I am interested in an electric but I may get a traditional. to start. I have played guitar for years but have recently become interested in the Oud and fretless instruments in general.
Has anyone played an electric Oud by Tharwat Saber? They sell them all over the internet but I have yet to find anyone who has played one. Any info would be great.
Thanks,
Jeff

Viken Najarian is the inventor of the electric oud model as you can see everywhere.
http://www.oud.net

All the other makers who follow this model are technically speaking making copies the oud that he was the first to design.

The Tharwat Saber ones are VERY cheap quality instruments, I would highly recommend against them. The sound quality is terrible and so are the building materials. If you are seriously going into the oud, invest in an instrument rather than wasting your money on a cheap model.

There is another seller (you can also find him on eBay) for an electric oud by Sukar with a hard case for around $500. This at least is from a builder that people have heard of.

Gawharet El Fan in Egypt also produce electric ouds, you can type their company name in a search engine. However, I personally have not been able to get in touch with them or their sellers (such as sphinxshop).

Our sadly deceased friend, Haluk Eraydin, also manufactured electric ouds, but I have not been able to get a hold of them.

Cankaya music though makes excellent sounding and high quality electric ouds with hard cases... Can't remember the price...

Personally, I am going to be going for the Najarian electric model simply because I have head excellent things from him. Many professional musicians that incorporate the oud use his model. He is in the USA, so there are also regulations that other international sellers do not have to adhere to.

And he is the nicest guy! :D

I have played electric ouds from several makers.

The only one I could recommend is the Najarian.

I will say that I dislike the sound of ALL of the solid-body electrics - they just don't sound like an oud to me.

electric Ouds

Thanks for all the replys. This forum is great. I have decided to go with a acoustic and use a pickup system on it to start.
I am looking forward to exploring the world of Oud music.
