Hello Mathew,

That is indeed my brother James.

My preferred tuning is (from Bass) C*, F*, AA, DD, GG, CC, FF
But it does depend on the Maqam.

The Bass C and F are changeable, sometimes I tune them D and G, D and F, B and E. It all really depends on what I want to play and use them for. But it is usually Tonic and 4th or Tonic and 5th tuning.

Cheers,

JT

Hi Joseph,

Looking great as usual man, both you and James, you guys rock !

Just listened to track 7 (ACO and Tawadros Bros), it's SPLENDID :airguitar:.....who's composition is that JT? Loved it to the end.

By the way, that oud in the pics seemed to me like a 6-course... quite different from that other oud of yours we've previously seen (the 7 course ).... awesome
All the best,
O.P.

Hello Oud Proff.

Track 7 is an original composition of mine called "Dahab", you can see a video here: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=Fkbdx0CB39A

As for the Oud it is actually my usual 7 string, I only put one string for the first and second bass courses. It only has 12 pegs due to this.

Thanks for the feedback...

Well JT, that piece was really "Dahab' (GOLD) ;)
By the way is it available in your latest CD? Would love to get my hands on that ecstatic record.

Always wishing you the best.

Thats Dahab! :)

We have already recorded the orchestral album, infact it was recorded in November 2006, but has not been released yet. The plan is in the next year or so...

The album is called DAHAB and features 8 original pieces composed by me for oud and orchestra with Richard Tognetti on Violin, James on Req and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. You can hear another track Oasis here: http://www.myspace.com/josephtawadros - let me know your thoughts...

Cheers...

Dear Joseph,
Thanks for the link to that other version of "Dahab". Man it's pretty impressive how you smoothly toss in some Saba-Maqam into the middle of rocking-style music !
A great musician/oudist published a Ph.D dissertation some years back about music composition/improvisation, discussing whether it originates from digestiion of previously accumulative musical experiences of the composer and/or his/her own and fertile imaginative and innovative musical mind (that's what I call a "Beautiful Mind" !), and breifly concludes that it's more likely an outcome mixture of both.
You have eloquently demonstrated that your Egyptian roots - where, in my humble opinion, the most powerful, passionate, expressive and Sharqy music was disseminated from (yes I am actually biased to Egyptian school of music, particularly when it comes to oud !!) alongside your West-flavored taste for music, presented in an amazing harmony makes your style quite unique. Passiontate music, and high tech. playing....what can be better on the oud !?

With relevance to this other version of Dahab, I think the rest of the orchestral band spice up the already hot dish, to make it a lot hotter and more yummy :)
Great composition, execution and overall presentation JT !, I can hardly imagine the audience sitting on chairs, but rather happily dancing to it specially towards the end :bounce:

By the way, James' work on the Riq is quite impressive too

Keep up the great work,

Dear Oud Proff.

Thank you so much for such beautiful words, it really does mean alot coming from you...

Im a big fan of the Egyptian school too!
My idea with all my collaborative work is to try and mix too aspects or genres smoothly rather than a corny and very cliched fusion. Creating an own genre in a way.
I love working with orchestra and especially violinist Richard Tognetti, I guess you have to hear some of the other slower pieces to know how great he is. And James, well he is a fantastic percussionist who Im very lucky to have as brother and peer.

With these orchestral works we are playing to large classical audiences and the reponse has been amazing, theres such a big energy in the room (from audience and musicians) and the musicians are have fun while being challenged from the usual classical repertoire. I recently did this with Famous Austrian Orchestra Camerata Salzburg and it was such a different music to them.

I dont know if you know but I have been invited to perform this program of music with the Australian Chamber Orchestra at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC on Sept 30. Do you live near by? I would love you to come along and to finally meet? I will try and organise some other performances/workshops in LA and New York.

Thanks again for your feedback, I really am happy you're enjoying it...

Best,

JT

Dear Joseph,

I always have the pleasure listening to your great work.

It is difinately wonderful to leave a mark in the oud world, particularly if one stays centralized around the Sharqy roots of oud music. I can imagine the audience enjoying this work much, and would love to be amongst the crowd listening to your performance live one day and to meet you in person. When in the US, I'm mostly in the MidWest though, but can sure take sometime off to enjoy music wherever it is....I've travelled across continents few times for music :) I did some search, and this Richard Tognetti guy is quite amazing ! Lovely to see his work on the violin along yours on the oud together indeed.
By the way did you say Spetember 30th @ Kennedy Center? which was like few days ago, or you meant October 30th?

All the best,

Hi Joseph

The frst oud gathering was really good and we were all just getting to know each other - brilliant to have a luthier like Michael there - he's a really special bloke. We plan to prepare just a little bit for future meetings so we can move things on a bit and learn more from each other. You are more than welcome anytime.

Hi JT,

Happy Birthday and all the best wishes with more and more success in the coming years, M. Mussa did talk about meeting you and was very happy to have met you in person, it would be great if we can arrange for a concert and a workshop to coinside with our next oud event. Let me discuss this with the clan and get back to you.

Hope you enjoyed that B'dy :)
