decisions decisions

Hey guys/gals

I am trying to decide between two online retailers to get a beginner's oud. I have seen that a few users have experienced http://www.palmyrami.com and http://www.rhythmfusion.com. MY question is which one is most well know for their quality and ease of transaction. I heard some fuss over palmyrami but I wasn't sure if a problem still persists. The two ouds I'm looking at are:

http://www.palmyrami.com/index.php?productID=654

and

http://www.rhythmfusion.com/product/H07A/H07A__Oud_Turkish_Student....

Thanks,

Loshem

The Turkish oud looks similar to ouds available in most Turkish tourist destinations for around US$80.

Hi Greg, I can see why you'd say that, but I want to defend the dealer in this case.

Rhythm Fusion is an actual physical store, in Santa Cruz, Caliifornia. It's one of the few places in Northern California where you can try various ouds. The fellow who runs it is named Dror. He carries a variety of ouds at any given time, though he's not trying to be a "high end" oud dealer. He mainly sells percussion instruments. Dror usually has plenty of instruments that aren't on the web site. Call him and see what he has! He's a great, honest guy, and also a professional musician. It's also hard to judge from a picture whether a non-professional oud is useless or might turn out to be a good deal. My experience is that Dror's prices are fair.

Palmyrami has been discussed very extensively in these forums. I personally had a strange but ultimately positive Palmyrami experience, that you can read about. At the end of the day I got a good deal on a Sukar model 14 oud that has been a great joy to play. Some other forum members are not happy, however.

Also, of course, you're comparing a Turkish oud with an Arabic oud.

Loshem,

I think it depends on the type of music you want to play. Turkish and Arabic Ouds have different string length and different tunings... Most of what I play is Arabic.. so a Turkish oud is not a good choice for me.

I'm very happy with my low end beginner Sukkar oud and I think they have the best quality to price I've seen in the US.

Looking at the Oud in the picture, I don't think I would pay $372 for it without seeing and playing it first. That price seems a little high for something that looks like the same quailty you can buy on Amazon.com... However, you might have better luck calling them and talking about what he has that's not on the website... you could get a good deal.

Personally, I'd rather have an oud from a known Luthier than one that is unsigned.... espeically if I was going to buy them sight unseen...

Palmyrami is really strange....
He wants to be recognised as a serious seller , here in the forum, but often problems happens.....and it's possible you don't receive what he send to you, but in this case he can say you are lying.....( and normally I should receive an email tomorow : "Why do you say bad things about me in the forum...etc ....etc....I would prefer receive the materials that I'm waiting since one year!!!!)
