Where can I learn about persian music?
Does anyone know a serious website that explains the dastgah, the terms and names of the forms of persian classical music? All the ones I find usually
are an introduction to non-musician westerners that don't provide enough "meat" of information. Thanks

Like you I've never seen much online.
I'd recommend the Radif of Mirza Abdollah, a book with 5 companion CDs of the complete radif, recorded by Dariush Tala'i, which I could listen to from
beginning to end. The book has a fairly comprehensive theoretical section and sheet music for the whole radif. It's published by a group called Mazda
in LA. I think it's around $100 - not actually that pricey when you consider what you get for it.

Shalom Masel,
Don't you have some master Persian musicians in Israel that you can study with? Menashe Sasson (from HaBreira HaTiv'it)? Shmuel Rozbhan? There
also must be someone at the Institute in Jerusalem...
Kol tuv,
John

I haven't seen any comprehensive websites. The best thing is to invest in some books.
Other than the radif book, one of the best books on the "dastgah" is this one:
The Dastgah Concept in Persian Music
By Hormoz Farhat. It's an excellent book in terms of practicality. Each mode is explained and then an example is given at the end of the book of how
the mode is used.
