I agree, nice combination of instruments. If you didn't know it was a sarangi you might think it was another stringed instrument more associated with the oud, maybe like a violin, kemence, etc. cheers,MW

Well, this was first time I met the guy, we were not even tuned properly, so it is real impromptu recorded on my mp3 player. I just want to see forum members opinion on "shoe box" kemence and oud combination, as I am considering further exploration/collaboration. Any suggestions on maqam/raga combinations, please?

Bhairavi is one of my favourites, suits the oud nicely.

Matthew,
How about Bhairavi/Hijaz-kar-kurd and Bhairav/Hijaz-kar combination?

Hi Branko
A hijaz-kar kurd/bhairavi would work nicely as they share a similiar scale pattern- hijaz kar kurd uses a minor 2nd ( western terminology) in its scale and bhairavi uses both the minor and the natural 2nd, both use a similiar 7th degree scale note.
a hijaz kar might be a bit more tricky, depending on the form you wish to use- from what I understand Hijaz Kar can have two forms, one having a natural 7th scale degree and one form without. If you use the one with a natural 7th scale degree ( ie: if Hijaz Kar in the key of C the natural 7th ( western terminology) would be a B note; if in the key of D it would be C#) it could fit OK depending how/when you modulate to it. Follow your own feelings on it- from what I've heard of your oud playing you should have no problems bud! cheers, MW

what I have been doing the last few years in this direction of combining ragas and makams is, rather than taking whole ragas and whole makams and hopefully finding compatibility, I have been taking makam and raga tetra and pentachords, and combining those and coming up with "ragmakams".

For example:
-"ragmakam ussak bageshri" (ussak tetrachord plus bageshri tetrachord)

-"desh huzzam" (desh pentachord plus huzzam tetrachord)

...but one that I found works really well when you take the entire raga and the entire makam, even though the notes are a bit different, still when you go back and forth between the two, are BHAIRAVI, and SABA.
