Taksim Hijaz ( Sombati's)
Hi Guys,
Here my try of the Hijaz taksim of Sombati after two weeks of practicing...
I changed the Kafla ( finishing) of the third part.
I wonder the swich to bayati at the end was really brutal...
Please if you have any comment do not hesitate..We are here to share ...
Thanks,

To be honest, I've got to work on it to understand and give a good critic. Right now, I can say the Bayati part is a little brutal but that sounds ok
! It contrasts, not hurts... To me the biggest difference is about the sound, I think your recording is more "objective", Sombati's one sounds really
bassy with resonance like in a wide room. But I'm not a specialist neither a technician. I know many of you have a better ear about this subject !

Hi David,
I have soudforge software. It is full of options; I can get any resonance or ambiance I want.
Sombti recordings were commercial, so the must have been recorded professionally...
And of course no comparison between my oud and Sombati s even if the technology advaces every day.

No don't do that ! Keep a natural sound, it's better to compare and work with. I like Riyad al Sombati's music but in spite of the commercial sound. I
would prefer to talk to you about the structure of his music, it's a shame nobody discusses about the different maqamat in use, the ghammaz and hassas
al hassas... Back on the form : what kind of microphone do you use ? There is a lot of breath on the recording, to me it's the best thing you could
improve. I use this microphone :

Not pro, but no breath. The best micro for the price ! (if you've got 60 € to invest of course)
About the way you work : you needed 2 weeks to get the whole taksim in your fingers without any scores, didn't you ?

Hi David,
I uploaded a new file ( same but smaller)
It is true that when you do one or two taksims of Sombati the others become easy and yes, I humbly can That I can master any taksim of Sombati because
what I learned is his Risha.
This microphone I bought it years ago from ebay ( I think for 1 $) but I do not use it. So, sometimes I use the microphone of the camera when I record
videos, othertimes I use Olympus recorder, a good device, also sometimes I use the microphone of my laptop....
Al hassas is the last note in the maqam.. it is really hassa ( sensitive).
thanks David...

Hi mrkmni,
You're last file sounds in the same spirit of the original (more bassy).

Happy to read that, I started the taksim Shadd `Araban by George Abyad in January of this year and I finished the analysis yesterday night... but I
must be lazy
Interesting, to me hassas means "leading tone" (in music of course) : in maqam Hijaz the F# is the hassas of G, and the E# can be considered as a
hassas al-hassas (double "leading tone"). This is a really interesting point : what words for what meanings ? It should be the subject of a
thread...
