70 year old Turkish oud value?

Hello, I have a 70 year old Turkish oud I want to sell locally in canada and have no idea what it is worth. It was made by Shamli Iskender, originally from Damascus but moved to Turkey. Apparently he and his brother Shamli Selim were well known respected oud luthiers. The oud is definitely well made. Only the rosettes have been replaced and the headstock repaired (impeccably) where it meets the neck. Other than that it is all original and the face has never been lifted. Unfortunately the Luthier who did the repairs put his sticker over the original covering most of it. The string height where the oud meets the body is a bit high but excellent near 1st position (by the headstock). Takes longer than usual to tune due to the pegs sticking but can be tuned in 7-10 minutes and holds the tune. The tone is awesome and after playing it for 1 hour it really warms up and begins to sing. If anyone has an idea about its value or knowledge about the luthier Shamli Iskender I would really appreciate it. hopefully the sound byte and photos will post. The mp3 is Necati Celik playing Evic Semai on this oud.

Hi robertojai,

I don't know the maker, but judging from the sound file, that's one very nice sounding oud. I've never seen an oud of this vintage with its original face intact, but pricing is very subjective: you could price it higher than any current production instrument and see if you get any takers. You could sell it to a local player who loves and values it for what they could afford, hey it goes to somebody who'll cherish, play and take care of it.
Are you a player ?? You could keep it..just a thought. Too bad about the label tho...really a bummer. Good luck man, and thanks for the sound clip.

Regards..Paul

Shamli Iskandar

There was a Shamli Iskandar oud on e-Bay some time ago (although the spelling of the name was a bit different) by Palmyrami (see mixed reviews about them in these forums).

He listed it for $1,999 and had no takers. Anyway, that's just a reference.

Good luck

Thanks guys for the input. Yeah the oud sounds great, even when I play it :) keep in mind that is in the hands of Necati whos technique, precision, and strength are unique. I'm not interested in charging a crazy price just something fair for both parties. Any more info is highly appreciated. Yeah Paul I play as well. I have 2 other Mustafa Copcuoglu ouds from 91' and 05' that seem to get most of the attention. I wont be sad if I keep it.
