Making a 7 Course Renaissance Lute

Nicely done Yaron.
All original lute rosettes were finished by embossing the face of the rosette with incised V cut lines which makes the design of the rosette tracery 'stand out' and appear more delicate. Are you planning to finish the rosette this way?

I know about the V groove embossing... not sure yet about doing it. :rolleyes:

It is so nice that way (for my eyes), I am thinking of keeping it like this.

I am building this Lute according to a detailed plan delivered by David Eduard's (live in GB) from a live lute from 1530+-
I don't invent or alter it in any way...

Thanks Yaron. I am always interested in who is building what when it comes to lutes!
So, from your response, I can conclude that your lute is modelled after the well known original 6 course, mid 16th C lute by Georg Gerle - the design modified to accommodate 7 courses and using alternative materials from the original (by U.K. luthier David van Edwards). This is a good choice of lute design for performing the late 16th C lute repertoire so should give satisfactory results .

Checking with David van Edward's web site, I note that he offers a complete lute building package including step by step instructions on CD-ROM, Full Size drawing etc. It will, therefore, be useful to others interested in making a lute (or an oud!) - and who might want to purchase the package - to see how you progress with the project.
As an experienced luthier you will, of course, find no problem in completing the project successfully.

Thank you! I couldn't summarize it better... Yes it is modelled after the well known original 6 course, mid 16th C lute by Georg Gerle - the design modified to accommodate 7 courses and I am using an alternative woods as similar as I can to the original.

I have entered this post especially to share the process with all of you (even though it is a Lute and not an Oud)

It is a bit complicated than an oud because the body is asimetric, there for every strip is in a differnt shape!
