Hey guys, I'd really like to get the maqam of the month post going again. It's very helpful to beginner players such as myself and I get a
collection of some pretty cool recordings . It would be great if one of the
more experienced members could get us started by picking a maqam. Last time, the maqam was nahawand. Thanx in advancedavid - 8-31-2004 at 12:18 AM
I dont have anything to post, BUT!!!Hijaz has always been one of my favorites.
Maybe it can be on that maqamrevaldo29 - 8-31-2004 at 07:11 PM
Great, Hijaz sounds good to me. I guess I will take some intiative and say that Hijaz is the Maqam of the month. Please everybody, if you just have 2
minutes, submit your own recording. ( don't make me look bad here ) This is a
great opportunity for all of us to improve and learn from each other. I will hopefully have my recording up by Thursday.

Here is my offering for this post. I hope this will encourage people to submit their recordings. I also hope to get some comments on how to improve my
playing.

revaldo29 I beleieve people don't post taqsims
here because there's another topic in the
forum ,it's an old topic
which truepharaoh has opened and
has many taqsims from people in here.
I posted this reply with respect to your topic.

revaldo29 - 9-3-2004 at 04:27 AM
Thanks for the reply bluesy. I don't know if you are talking about the maqam of the month post, but if you are, that was posted on the main page.
I don't think there is a dedicated section for recordings (correct me if i'm wrong).
Bahleh, welcome back. Congratulations on your new oud. It sounds great. Thanx for posting a sound clip, I hope others will too.
About my recording, is it working for anyone at all? David, if it's just you, I can email it to you cause I can't post anything bigger
than 1 meg on here.
I look forward to hearing some more recordings soon. Thanx SamirCanada - 3-31-2006 at 02:35 PM
Any body else want to develop the maqam Hijaz as a song or Taqsim?
I ran accross this thread and... it didnt go too far even tho maqam hijaz is an important maqam. Iam going to prepare a taqasim of my own too and
Hopefully everyone will join this time.
Iam pumped for this one... its about time we hear some oud being played on the forrums. revaldo29 - 3-31-2006 at 05:20 PM

Nice Emad.. really nice. Could it be that mr. Ashmawy get's his ouds produced by Ustaz Amin?
It would seem a little hard to hold in the pictures is it?
I will get my post ready latter on today.
Adnan.. I dug it up far far into the abyss of posts but now that its back its going to be the shoot
Thank you Samir,

Actually this is one of the best and easiest oud I ever held.
I am sure it will improve my poor skills.
I do not know where Mr. Ashmawy gets his ouds from.
Master Fathi Amin ouds are well known. I am not the only one who's got a long neck oud made by him. I bought this oud from the violinest Maged
El-Sharony. I am sure you heard of his brother Emad El-sharony the composer of the winning song "Kawkab Thany" or "another planet" sang by Medhat

Nice Tagsim Sydney. Very classic. Mixed between Riyath Al-Sonbaty and Freed Al-Atrash and your own .........

Sydney: I really enjoyed your playing. Just added it to my personal library. Excellent precision, feeling and musical depth. I thought the switch
and conclusion of the piece to nahawand really interesting. Thanks for sharing.Greg - 4-1-2006 at 07:42 PM

Iam loving this thread now that its back!! whohoo!!

revaldo29 - 4-2-2006 at 04:26 PM
Alright folks,
Here is my humble offering. I agree with samir, its great to have these threads back. I hope to hear some criticism from the more experienced
players oud there. There isn't much of a point in posting if no one points out your mistaes.SamirCanada - 4-3-2006 at 06:29 PM
That was nice Adnan. You can truly hear the difference between your playing here and the one above. Iam trying to get sharper more precise notes when
I play up the fingerboard. Iam sure you notice where Iam rather off tone when I played the really high notes up my fingerboard.
The main problem is when I look up the maqam Iam playing in first then I figure out the notes down the neck on my c string. but when in a taqasim you
never know wich maqam comes next so I get the intervals messed up. Especialy
when doing the verry fast farid al atrache part when he finishes the Awal hamza taqasim.
Hijaz Andalus
LeeVaris - 4-3-2006 at 07:23 PM
OK... so here's my humble offering.. a bit sloppy but hey... its not a proper taqasim and it sort of devolves farily quickly into a sort of
flamenco-esque jam - 1 take... I'm still learning.SamirCanada - 4-3-2006 at 07:40 PM
I like it Lee! I find you have your own style in all your recordings.
And of course it shows your guitar background comming trough.
Let me guess that sounds like a Fouad Jihad oud. Right?
Great to hear everyone playing some oud again!!

Jonathan,
I won't fake it ... You do have what it takes to become a good oud player. You play music within your culture and that is great. I like your playing
mate. Jonathan - 4-6-2006 at 05:07 PM
Thanks, Emad. If I could play like you, I would be a happy man. I am OK when it comes to folk tunes and simple stuff like that, but when it comes to
taksims. . . that's when I get into trouble. I run out of ideas, and they tend to get a bit boring. One day. . .
I appreciate the kind words.SamirCanada - 4-6-2006 at 09:25 PM
Wow. Iam diggin it Jonathan I really liked it. Thanks for keeping your word and posting! you tha man! I love the sound of your oud. Wich oud did you
use for the recording?Jonathan - 4-7-2006 at 12:39 AM
Thanks. I hope we keep these going, because it will sort of force me to study this stuff.
I used Jameel's first. Something about it--it's just easy to play. Not sure what it is--the shape of the neck, I guess. Just fits right. And the
sound is crisp and clean, and has filled out a bit--a lot more midrange and bass. I really like it.Tablah23 - 5-15-2006 at 10:19 PM

TruePharaoh21 - 5-25-2006 at 12:41 PM
Man, I have to say, you all just keep amazing me. I have a folder on my home computer that has a collection of all the files that various forum
players have posted throughout the last few years, and it's nice to go back and listen sometimes to how great some of you guys are, and how rapidly
some of the players have progressed.
From Mike's page on Farid...
"So, if I want to talk about Farid el-Atrache, I would present his songs, his compositions, and his music. That will speak for Farid el-Atrache."
Sometimes, we get so caught up in discussions and debates (...sometimes, arguments), and we forget that what speaks for us, as for Farid el-Atrache,
is the music.
I've learned much about Jameel, for example, from the taqsims he's posted throughout the years. Yes, I read of you (Jameel) as the oud maker (and what
an oud maker at that!), and I hear of who you are as a person through your playing. Quite the taqsim, my friend. You never fail to amaze me. I must
say, I like that introduction at 0:33 - 0:47. I went back to listen to it as I'm typing this, and if I wasn't sitting in a computer lab right now, I'd
shout Allah aleik! 3:15 - 3:22, nice tribute.
Emad, I really like that move at 0:21, where you repeat the notes. Very dramatic and thoughtful. You're quite the player, and each time I hear
something new from you, I remember why I felt that urge once-upon-a-time to make that page for you, which you've so gratefully mentioned so often, and
though I haven't been there to say "don't mention it" every time, I wish to say so now, as well as "you're most deservent of that and more." By the
way, 4:00 - 4:10, nice tribute as well.
Jonathan... I don't know what to say for you. The only thing greater than hearing you play is watching you play. The feeling becomes visible. You, no
doubt, have a huge amount of feeling in you as evidenced in that bass hit at 0:49. Keep up the great work, my friend, and I hope to see you (and hear)
you soon.
I apologize if I didn't get to the other players, though I undoubtedly will in time. I want to write personalized ones for each of you, but as I was
typing, only the posts on this page appeared. I will get back to the first page soon. Adnan, Samir, and Lee, I will get to it.
And just a general comment for you, Samir, as I think you post more consistently in terms of sound files than the rest of us... I've heard you since
you began to play and I hear you now. My goodness man, what progress. Hats off to you.
Everyone, keep up the great work! You're all quite inspiring to me. I am humbled by you.
TP21TruePharaoh21 - 5-25-2006 at 06:11 PM
So... to continue from the previous post...
Samir, I was just listening to that Hijaz one posted above. I like the section from 1:14 to 1:16, very soulful. I wish we could hear more of the
2:03-2:07 section. Seems like you got an idea... no, a feeling, and that was quite the feeling. Please elaborate.
Lee... what can I say, man. 0:17... what a move! I've listened now to it maybe 6 or 7 times, and I hear new expression in it every time. You're
something else, my friend. Your feelings of expression are only paralleled by the (unparalleled) love for the music that I've seen from you.
Revaldo... I have another file of you playing some "noodling" around on the oud. And now I hear this stuff from you. I think everyone will agree here
that you've been practicing a great deal (inti bet zaker men warana wala eih??)... and it's paid off. Continue down this road, and you'll just keep
surprising us every time.
I wish I had more words to say what I wish about you all and your music. Maybe... thank you.
TP21
P.S. I hope I don't come off as a judge (or a jerk, for that matter) by stating what I've said above. I just enjoy listening to you all!SamirCanada - 5-26-2006 at 01:38 PM

Ya 3een Ya 3een.
Man what can I say, for some reason I haven't clicked on this thread for a long time.
3emaad as I've always said, you're playing has that beautiful authentic arabic sound that I've been trying to accomplish for since the day I
picked up the oud. btw, how do you get that cool background music? I use audacity to record (its free so its very limited)
Jameel, I have to agree with Sydney, you are much too humble. That was a graeat recoring. Are you using the Nahat replica that you built a few
months back? That oud sounds killer. You can praise others all you want but a man who can build such an amazing oud and play it so beautifuly is at
the top of the oud hierarchy (kind of a funny concept),
Sameer, man in a few years you're going to sound like sunbati or qasabji! I'm so shocked at how much you've improved on this recording. You
usually sound better everytime you post but this by far out does all the others. Keep at it man.
TP, what can I say? I didn't even remember that recording until you brought it up. You really blew us all away with those videos mike posted on
the mp3 page. You've only been playing for like 3 years right?
I will post a recording later on tonight. I put new pyramid strings on my shehata last night and it sounds like a tin drum. hopefully I can fix it
a little before posting.SamirCanada - 5-26-2006 at 05:02 PM
Jameel's is 100% right we owe you TP bigtime. You really put the life in the forrums. This thread is going to be amazing. I can see it play out.
Thank you Emad... you gave me a lot of advice and Iam trying to follow them. I greatly apreciate what you did for me.
Adnan your too much buddy!! I cant wait to hear you play even with new strings your going to sound killer. Actualy I didnt think too highly of this
new post of mine but I'll take the compliment.
And your soo right about the TP videos... they were off the hook.
Keep this going people..Jameel - 5-26-2006 at 06:06 PM
Samir,
Great taqasim. Nice flow, modulations, timing. It was a pleasure to listen to.
Adnan,
Thanks, but that is not my oud. That is Mike's M. Hifnawi. You can't build sound like that, well, you can, you just have to wait about half a century
for it to show up! It actually reminds me of my first oud. Maybe you can hear a similarity.TruePharaoh21 - 5-26-2006 at 10:37 PM
Hey guys,
You owe me nothing. I thank you for your kind words about the previous videos, though you really don't have to give them. I'm humbled by all of your

TP21 --
You're a class act.
When I posted my first file on mikeouds a year or so ago, you sent me a lengthy U2U critiquing the whole thing. I really valued it. And value it.
I never had anybody teach me how to play a taksim, so yours was the first instruction I got. And it was extremely valuable.
We didn't know each other, had never met, but you went out of your way to help me out.
And, you sent it to me as a U2U. It was a very insightful appraisal of the taksim, and demonstrated your knowledge of the art of taksim. It probably
would have helped everybody if you had posted it in the main forum, but you just did it privately. Because you did it not to show off your knowledge,
but to help me out.
I have heard you play taksims that are so drenched in emotion that they inspire me to keep going. To not just play the notes, but to get that soul
from the instrument. Your music bleeds--never sacrificing the feeling in order to show off technique.
Can't wait to hear it again.
All the best.sydney - 6-2-2006 at 08:47 AM

Sammy keep it going... If you want to help you flow you should listen to he old masters and notice how they keep there phrases going. Try and be more
relaxed and let your risha go at it. Also you can definetly tell a difference from your first posts.

I would like to contribute a taqsim in rast (it actually starts on bayati...) that I just recorded. I haven't been playing oud for very long but I
tried best to use whatever little understanding I have of seyir and modulation.
While I am not intimidated I know that I am not in the league of most people contributing here, which gives me the more inspiration to learn.

Ok my turn! Nice job on keeping this thread going Samir. Your taqassim sounded very nice. I'm telling you man, you clean that up just a little and
you're going to sound like a pro in no time!
You guys are lucky this time, becuase I've found out about a little secret known as google video! So here is a 6 minute recording of me improvising in
and out of maqam rast. Enjoy:
Hey oudplayer I'm from zofit, it's a small village near kfar-saba, tira etc. Thanks for the compliment but I really need a new teacher and a band so I
can practice more!jshead - 11-22-2006 at 04:29 AM
hey, you guys, thanks to all of you posting you work. It is very interesting and helpful to so many taqsims on Rast. I don't tend to do much really
on Rast even though I like the maqam a lot, so now maybe I will work on it.SamirCanada - 11-22-2006 at 04:36 AM
Hey Adnan that was nice suprise I have been listening to your video and it motivated me into making one myself. Here Iam trying to follow your advice
of cleaning it up... all goes well untill the end! where I basicaly trip on my own fingers much like they were shoes and I had steped on the laces to
trip myself oh well... got caried away improvising I guess.
By the way our ouds sound really diferent for being the same maker and around the same design.
allah allah ya samir! Thats what i'm talking about. Very nice man. I can tell that you listen to a lot of recording because all of your taqassim sound
a little different.
Yeah my ouds sound like garbage on that recording. There are many reasons for this. One is that i'm using a cheap computer mic. My room is in the
basement and the wall im facing is make of concrete. And finally, I'm not too impressed with these strings (cheap pyramid). I just put on some of the
low tension aquila strings. They sound ok so far. They sound a bit too lose for my taste at times though.
adnanSamirCanada - 11-24-2006 at 05:46 PM
Those lower tension aquila strings are the ones I have. They are nice but I have to raise them at the brige because otherwise they are too low and
they strike the fingerboard. Try doing that with yours by tying the knots higher at the brige tell me if you see a difference.
peace
SamirAshley - 5-27-2007 at 09:17 AM
Hey everyone...
I was thinking that seeing as truepharaoh has already made a taksim posting thread, the makam of the month thread could be a more in depth analysis
of an actual makam that would cover areas such as the progression and development of the makam (I forget the proper terminology) by this I mean an
analysis of how to move between comprising tetrachords, nuances of intonation (moving quatertones and such) modulations and transpositions....perhaps
this could be accompanied by audio examples so that it would be easier to recognise all these things....
I dont know how much I can contribute towards this at the moment but it would certainly be an invaluable learning source for myself and others who
dont have access to any formal tuition.
Just a thought..what do you all think?
Best Wishes
Ashdampwater - 1-19-2008 at 01:43 PM
This thread is really engaging and its alot of fun listening to what everybody has to offer with their creativeness in each maqam. And since maqam el
Rast is one of my most favorite maqams as it captures the essence of Eastern music with how passionate and vigorous this maqam sounds, i decided to
record a small taqsim to contribute to this thread. I've heard many great taqsim and thought I should contribute!

I have just joined Mike's Ouds Forums.
I have been playing the Oud for about 5 years.
I also really like Hijaz, especially the change from Rast to Nahawand on 4 on the way down, this always sounds dramatic for me.
I just returned from Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Turkey, and heard Hijlaz all the time., as well as Bayati, Saba, Rast, etc.
I wil try to post a Taqsim soon.Ali - 7-13-2010 at 01:41 PM

I was wondering if you could give me some more info about the long neck Fathi Amin oud ?
My first question is ,could you tell me on what note the neck and body meet ? for example
on a regular oud,if the first string is tuned C , Then ,where the neck and body meet, would
be G , Right? so what it that on your long neck Oud?
My seconed question is ,Do the Higher notes in the extra lengh of this long neck Oud
respond well if you want to use them ?Or How do they respond?
And My third question is that do you know Mr. Amin still makes long neck ouds (I could
not find that style in his website) ?
Thank very much

Hijaz is an excelent Choice, please share your knowledge with us, this is a freat forum, thanksYahoodi1 - 8-4-2010 at 02:25 AM
Yahoodi1 that is not hijaz, it is nahawand on sol. They share the same notes but are not the same maqam. Lamma bada is often refered to as maqam
farahfaza and not nahawand because traditionaly maqam nahawand sits on the note rast (do in arabic tuning) and farahfaza on yegah (the low sol), but
in fact maqam ferahfaza is a turkish makam and it has its own characters and not just the tonic that seperates it from nahawand, so I say this song is
nahawand on sol.sloppyjack593 - 10-9-2010 at 09:34 AM
