Cocobolo

sabbassi - 7-26-2011 at 11:26 AM

Today I have come across a very old and beautiful piece of wood.: Cocobolo. I couldn't resist it and although it is an expensive wood. so I took it home and had very good look at it before i started cutting.

it is 115cm cm long 4,5 thick, and 34 cm wide.

Luckily the crack (see picture) stops far away form the safe 70cm needed for the ribs.

for now I have cut only 19 ribs needed of one oud,

The wood is so nice inside with some figures.

Does any one have a picture of a cocobolo oud? or any experience. it would be nice to share.

It is a true rosewood and seems to have very good tonal qualities

Hi Samir,
this will be a beautifull oud. Saad al Tayyar who is a master instrument maker, has built many ouds out of cocobolo. Its a beautifull wood that produced a very nice sounding oud.

You must be carefull though because its an oily wood so choose wisely which adhesive and finish you will use. Because the natural oils in the wood can affect them greatly.

cant wait to see it come to life :)

Oh yes I have seen his work. Gorgeous ouds. master pieces. we would love to see more from him.:)

Yallah baa... Eyzeen akhar min el cocobollo habibi :)

Just a word of encouragement. I am exited to see this oud come to life :)

No, but of an acoustic guitar:

Cocobolo is sounding similar to Brazilian rosewood, but it looks much nicer ;)

I bet shellac will be a great choice, or am I wrong? It would definitly look fantastic.

Hi Chris, Samir

I guess the only way to find out is to make a Cocobolo oud :)

this piece or cocobolo was found by chance in a big log.

Difficult to work with the swirls though, a rasor sharp planner did the job. because the cocobolo is a bit oily itself, is is a pleasure to work with. cleaning the joints with naphtha before using the glue is a must.

The left side of the bowl has also some boomatching.

How was the experience of working with Cocobollo? would you use it again?

Interesting question. From the look and sound, the answer is definitely yes, isn't it? But the question is, is it much harder to work with in the building process?

Hi Samir

Very beautiful oud

Check u2u

Thanks

sabbassi - 10-8-2011 at 10:46 AM

Hi Guys,

Because of the oily nature of the cocobolo, it is very smooth ans crisp when planing the ribs, even the very cruly ones.
Bending is also not a big issue. but glueing the ribs together must be done with lot of care, cleaning and using alcohol and longer curing time.

But exactly as Matthias said, it is poisonous wood, but smell very nice. I always use dust mask with any kind of wood anyway. But the cocobolo without a dusk must can give nose and skin irritations.

I will definetely will still work with cocobolo (I still have enouph for 5 ouds I think) as it is one of most beautiful woods around.'

This oud is now new and will be very crisp in a while and the cocobolo will show its capability as an accoustic wood for music instruments.

the OUd is on the way to Italy :)

piano boards

sabbassi - 10-8-2011 at 11:22 AM

yesterday, I've got 4 very old piano boards form the village piano dealer. What a gentelmen.
these are old german spruce tops.
form all this big board, I was able to get only 4 tops for ouds. and lot of braces.

I also just finished a new oud:
IND rosewood and Brasilian ironwood with spruce top.
I will put the strings and the pegs tomorrow or sometimes next week.
