Zirgulah is a maqam I should have included in my tune-book.
This is often confused with Hijazkar today but is ascending and is on dugah (D).
This is a basic maqam and is the oldest of the 'Hijaz with a major seventh family'.
The others being:
Hijazkar (kardani, c), Shaddaraban (nawa, g), Shanaz (muhayyer, d) and Suzidil (huseyni, a)

Yes, some of these were transposed from Turkish notation.
This maqam is not used much in Turkish style music either though these days.
I wanted to put some pieces into Arabic/Western notation.
This maqam is hardly ever used in Arabic style music today.

It would appear that it is ascending, while Shehnaz is descending.
Sometimes I think if Tatyos sneezed in the middle of a taqsim, Turkish musicians would have given the maqam a new name.

Shehnaz is descending and actually can act a lot like Buselik in the higher octave, while Zirguleli Hicaz seems to be a more straight ahead ascending
makam.
I've seen plenty of pieces labeled as Hicazkar that really act like Zirguleli Hicaz, and I think that especially for folk/traditional songs, both
Turkish and Greek musicians have used the names Zirguleli Hicaz and Hicazkar interchangeably (though we know that Hicazkar really is descending along
with other complexities).
It makes sense that this has happened in the Arabic repertoire as well, since not too long ago everyone in the East Mediterranean/Aegean was sharing
ideas and sounds.

As I mentioned before, It seems that Zirgulah is the oldest of this family of maqamat. This maqam was known just as Zirgulah before 'Zirgulah
Hijaz'.
This makes sense, Shaddaraban, Shanaz and Suzidil are from the same Hijaz '#7' family but don't attach the name Hijaz afterwards.
I agree that this is a more straight ahead maqam compared with others in this family, particularly Hijazkar and Shanaz.
Zirgulah is mentioned in the Medieval sources and in the Cantemir repertoire.
Shanaz is also in the Cantemir book interestingly.
Hijazkar, Shaddaraban and Suzidil are later creations.
Hijazkar seems to date from the 1800's.
