HI,

While I was on vaccation in Morocco this summer , I spent most of time with my Friends Khalid Belhaiba and Majid Atik.
I have the honor to show you 2 master pieces they have made for me.
The first one is made from Rosewood bowl, bizon Horn/ebony fingerboard. shamsa and pickguard also from Horn...
The second one is Sapelli bowl and Eben fingerboard.
both have first degree Epecia sound boards and Epecia Braces.
It's a life joy to have them. Pyramid strings are used (Fa).

Hi,

About the first one, it's really amazing, perfect craftmanship, awesome fingerboard ..... It's really a special oud.

Enjoy it in good health!

Whoa, amazingly clean and beautiful instruments! Especially the first one. Are the neck markers perfectly accurate if checked against an electronic tuner set on well-tempered?

Can you please explain. When you say "Fa'", do you mean it's tuned FA LALA RERE SolSol DoDo FaFa?

sabbassi - 8-24-2009 at 02:39 AM

fernandraynaud : thanks for the comments
I mean the first pyramid string (trebble) is Fa (F).
F,C,G,D,A,F is the order.

Yes the neck markers (ebony) are like you said. like guitar
I'm not an expert in the matter. I have to ask khalid about this.

Shamsa close up

sabbassi - 8-24-2009 at 02:47 AM

Shamsa close up, and the ebony/maple purfling hand made.
lot of work :(

Sazi - 8-24-2009 at 04:29 AM

Truly a work of art, I hope we can have a sound file once they have settled in! Enjoy:)

Why would you check against well temperament in particular? It seems a rather obscure choice. I think just intonation (standard 5 limit) would probably be the most logical choice. If you wanted a temperament, might as well do equal-tempered, no?

here is a sound sample played by my friend Khalid Jdidi.
Remeber: the Strings are just 5 minutes old and the ud is very new.

Ahh, my favorite Mohammad Abdel Wahab tune, and that oud sounds amazing!! You are one VERY lucky guy, it must be so inspiring playing an oud with such an incredible sound! May you enjoy them in good health.

Luttgutt - 9-2-2009 at 04:46 AM

Thanks Sabbassi!
It is a joy to listen to such nice sounding ouds.

I likes Majids oud! Lovely base!!And I love its simple beauty. Is it turkish size?

Alf mabrouk, again..

p.s. take good care of your ouds. I just dropped my favorit on the floor, and both my heart and oud cracked!

sabbassi - 9-2-2009 at 05:41 AM

Luttgutt,
Thanks for the comment, Majid make very good uds for a very good price.
He make them with lot of passion and love for this job.
Sorry to hear that you brke your uds.

Thank you Sazi.

fernandraynaud - 9-2-2009 at 03:25 PM

Sorry, oops, mistake, I meant Equal Tempered, which is indeed the logical choice as a starting place, and what you'd most ordinarily find on a tuner, there isn't even any such thing as THE "Well Temperament", there are many.

Did you see some of the schemes they have come up with on guitar, where the frets are not straight lines, they stagger to provide Pythagorean (I think) intervals?
